I spent a month in Barra in the mid seventies and stayed at a restaurant/rooms at Mama Lupe's.

I was very curious to see how much or how little it had developed over the years, so I searched the web and found your web site.

I swam in the Laugna and walked along the beach to Malaque (don't know the spelling) to the bank to cash travellers' cheques. It was paradise, rural, undeveloped and the people were so beautiful and kind to us.

While there, we ate what they ate and lived as they did, simply and happily. For me the only way to really understand their culture and their lives, is to live with them.

I'm a senior now and unfortulately on a very limited income so the possibility of returning is unlikely.

So happily, I saw your great photos and it made my day.

Thank you,

K. Harper Toronto, Ontario Canada

I am PADI certified to dive, but I am having my 22, 21 and 11 year old children take diving lessons in Denver.

We would like to do our open water certifications in Ixtapa when we visit from December 28 to January 4.

Once certified, we would like to dive another day or two while there, so if we can get certified on the 29th, that would be great.

Can you offer us open water certifications, plus additional dive trips?

We will be staying at the Las Brisas Hotel in Ixtapa.

Thanks.

J. O'Connor Denver, Colorado USA

REPLY

I am not a dive shop, just a website, with stories about my diving trips.

You will find at the bottom of my Ixtapa page, and my Zihuatanejo page., under related Websites, links to dive shops in the area. Both are good and both are PADI.

May I suggest that after you are certified, dive with the other one as each will take you to a different area.

Also there is Isla Ixtapa that I am told is an excellent dive site and I believe there is another dive shop there.

You might also want to check with your hotel as they may have affiliation with one of the dive shops.

Good luck and pleasant diving.

Ixtapa divers doesn't have a dive site but I found this:

Ixtapa Divers - Located directly across the road from the Radison, Ixtapa Divers is one of the two scuba providers located in the resort area

Ixtapa Aqua Paradise is a young company of divers (DIVE SCHOOL) in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo, where we strive after keeping the quality and service standards that distinguish all the PADI dive centers.

Dear Lee

I am an graduate student studying an historic Chinese archaeological site in North America. Currently I am writing a masters thesis on a feature found in the old Chinatown that appears to be related to traditional Chinese mortuary rituals.

This feature was a small circular pit filled with animal bones (pig, chicken, sheep, and cow), remains of Chinese clothing, and many other personal items.

I believe this feature was created in a ritual similar to the one on your web page "A Death in China" where personal items and offerings were placed in a circule and burnt for Feng He Hua.

I have two questions.

First, what is this ritual called?

I have searched many sources and can not find its name. Second, may I have your permission to use photographs from "A Death in China" for public presentations?

I have been researching traditional Chinese death rituals for over three years and your web site is the only source with pictures of this ritual.

Thank you for your time,

C. Leatherman

REPLY

I just had supper with my ex and asked her but she doesnt know a name for the ritual.

I will contact a couple of other friends and see if they know.

The purpose is to supply the dead with goods they may need in the after life; food, money, clothing.

The first anniversary and the second anniversary are important. One must attend the gravesite and burn incense and xibo (Imitation money), set out wine, and food. Feel free to use the pictures.

All of my pictures have been cropped and lowered in resolution for faster appearance on the website.

If you let me know which pictures you wish to use I will send you the originals at higher resolution.

PS: Did you also see my web page "A Chinese Funeral" At the bottom of that page, under related websites, is a link you may find of interest.

Just had a letter, see my guest book, from a reader a couple of days ago, asking about travel times and prices for Sanya. I forwarded your letter to him. and will post your letter in my guest book.

Hello Lee,

1. Thank you for that i am very Grateful to you, very strange but most of our hits on our web site are from the US.

We are thinking of promoting Sanya on US search engines ...

2. I have been to the same village of your article, very strange place....

lots of beautiful girls..

3. This business is going to be difficult as there is so much competition in the UK for China, but Sanya is not promoted.

Thanks again for you help,

REPLY

1. The word of China being open for travel is slowly spreading throughout north America, especially of people of Chinese descent who wish to visit to their roots.

2. Yes the girls are very beautiful. I often regret not accepting their talisman upon entry to the village. If you accept it you have to stay there until you marry her. Could have been quite interesting.

3. Probably because none of them are fluent enough in Chinese. To move freely throughout Sanya, or anywhere in the country one must be able to read, and speak, Chinese, or have a friend, or guide, who is fluent in the language.

In Sanya we had trouble with the language and my family speak fluent Mandarin. But Sanya like many parts of China have dialects that are not even close to Mandarin.

On top of which there probably isnt room for more tourists in Sanya. If you look at my pictures an see the line up of tour busses, wow. Talk about ants on an ant hill.

I found you looking for information about Haikou and Sanya.

I would appreciate if you would answer some questions for me.

1. How long is the journey by road from Sanya to Haikou?

2. The trip you purchased in Shanghai is the price quoted in Canadian $

3. Do you have any idea on the cost of just the flight from Shanghai to Haikou or Sanya

Thanks

PS I appreciate you having the information on the web so that others can learn from your experience.

1. I am going to guesstamate, 6 hrs. But that is very rough as we went on a tour bus, from Sanya, that made many stops on the way out and a few on the way back. And I was never sure how close we got to Haikou.

2. That would be Chinese Dollars, RMB or Yuan. At that time the rate was 6 to 1, so divide by 6 for the Canadian equivalent.

On my China page, http://www.leespage.ca/h/tra/ch.html , I have a currency converter

3. Im sorry, we booked a tour that include plane, hotel, side trips, etc.

I am hoping that you can give me appropriate direction for a very traditional Chinese Family.

The father has passed away the funeral is tomorrow. 10/15.

We asked the eldest son whom is my friend if we could send flowers for the viewing or funeral and he said that would not be necessary. Of course it is not necessary but we thought it would be nice.

Is there something that is appropriate and traditional that we can send now at this point? Would a flowering plant sent to the house be appropriate, or perhaps a fruit basket.

Want to do the right thing without offending the family.

I appreciate your help.

Dean O. Chicago, IL USA

REPLY

You probably won't get this in time, as the funeral is today.

If you look in the middle of my page, http://www.leespage.ca/h/ar/d.html , you will see some strips of cloth hanging behind the banners on a string, on the wall. This is traditional, about a yard or two from a roll of silk cloth.

Next picture down shows a wicker stand with a ring of flowers. This too is traditional but may not be available in Chicago. You would have a florist deliver it to their house and they will drape it with a banner saying who sent it. They may take it to the funeral home later.

Barring this, cash is always appropriate.

But I am not sure if it should be in a red envelope. If you have time to go to China Town and talk to a store owner that sells them, he could tell you if he has some that are appropriate for funerals.

You should visit their house and pay your respects.

At this time you; would give them the silk, tell them that flowers are on the way, or give them the money.

If they are close friends, all three would not be inappropriate.

I'm fascinated by the big trucks that keep us alive. I love seeing all the varieties of tractors and trailers while I'm trying to stay out of their way!

Your glossary of trucking terms is great! I got there by looking in Google for an explanation of why the drawbar between the semi-trailer and the pup (are these correct terms?) of two-trailer hoppers are so long (especially cement haulers). They are much longer than the usual two-trailer or three-trailer rigs' drawbars. Why?

I'm also curious about some newer trailers I've noticed, usually flatbeds, whose axles are really far apart - several yards as opposed to the typical just-enough-to clear-the-tires you see on most rigs. 1) Why? 2) Don't they scub the tires on one of the axles, or are they articulated?

Finally, if you can stand another question, why are the vertical reinforcing strips on soft-side trailers (and some that look hard-side but flimsy) spaced so irregularly? They usually have a more-or-less even spacing toward the back over the axles, but then they seem random nearer the front.

Thanks for the help. If you know of a good primer for amateur truck-watchers like myself (other than yours!), I'd appreciate your guidance. Big Rigs for Dummies or something?

Thanks -

Mike Riley(a fan) Colorado Springs, Colorado

p.s. We're here in Portland, Oregon to visit our daughter on the occasion of the birth of her first child, so I'm seeing logging trucks that I don't get to see in Colorado. Cool.

REPLY

* the drawbar between the semi-trailer and the pup (are these correct terms?) of two-trailer hoppers are so long

One reason is to spread the weight over a greater distance, especially on bridges. Most of the tongues in the draw bar, tow bar, or reach, are extendable and the tongue is retracted into the reach when the rig is running empty.

*axles are really far apart

1. This spreads the weight out and allows for a greater weight on the back of the trailer, though the load must be reduced on the front of the trailer so as to maintain the maximum overall weight. This is useful if a truck has to haul a large piece of equipment but still has room, deck space, for some lighter cargo.

* Don't they scrub the tires

2. Most definitely. All of the tires will scrub when turning a corner but the companies feel it is worth it.

On my axel page, you will find pictures of the different spacings.

* why are the vertical reinforcing strips spaced so irregularly? They usually have a more-or-less even spacing toward the back over the axles, but then they seem random nearer the front.

I never noticed this but I would assume it is because the sides will take more force directly over the axels with less strain on the sides near the front of the trailer.

* a good primer for amateur truck-

I put this `trucking for beginners into WebCrawler, and came up with this, http://www.techwritingjobs.com/shop/asinsearch_B00085R0Y6.html ,but I cant seem to find any description of it.

PS. This reminds me that I still need to put some pictures into my logging truck stories; West Coast, and Cariboo.

Hi, Lee.

I discovered your website quite by accident when searching for photos of production vehicles.

I am currently completing an exhaustive, behind-the-scenes book about the TV series La Femme Nikita, and I would very much like permission to use two of your photos of production vehicles in my book (electrical and hair/makeup/wardrobe).

I worked on Nikita as the assistant to the executive producers for the entire run of the series, and have been working on this book for the past four and a half years since the series left the air.

Just so you know, this is not a gossipy, tell-all type of book, but rather, a peek behind the curtain as to how a TV show is actually produced day to day.

To that end, the book features interviews with all the heads of major production departments on the series, including our transportation coordinator and lead hair and makeup people.

I am interested in using the photos in those two sections.

Because this book is technically unofficial, I'm writing it on a shoestring budget, but I would be more than happy to not only credit you for the photos, but provide the URL to your website for readers as well.

Thank you in advance for your consideration and I wish you the best in all your endeavors.

Sincerely,

When I was in Edmonton a couple of years ago, after I took the pic. I looked up my dads name in the city archives. It shows he was with the Dept. of Agriculture, living at that address in `55.

I recall living there for 3 years but what do I know, I was only 9 yrs old. My sister was 14.

I had a pic of my dad sitting in a police car talking on the phone, old style radios. I know he was a Mountie when we first moved there.

When we lived there the front yard was surrounded by a carrigana hedge. The outside of the house was wood, shiplap. And there was a balcony across the front and the back.

My bedroom was upstairs on the left and I would crawl out the window onto the balcony and decorate the railing with Christmas lights.

From there we moved to Sicamous, B. C.

If booking in advance is necessary, do you have a phone number for Mar Caribe?

Hello

I like your page, especially the trucking part. Borrowing the Cat and Glide must have been fun!

I found your site while searching for trucking jobs in the Whistler area. I want to move there eventually, but after searching through every resource I know, I've found nothing. I'd be perfectly happy with something local, but there seems to be none of that. I was expecting it; Whistler is not known as an industrial power.

Resigned to putting that idea on the back burner for now, I've started looking at the oilpatch. From all I hear, it's hardass work, but pays well.

I got an oilfield business directory in the mail, and judging from it alone there are many different kinds of driving jobs to be had. I have had somewhat greater success finding information on the internet for driving in the oilpatch than I had for driving in Whistler. Still, it amounts to little.

I hoped I could ask your advice in the matter of moving to the oilpatch and eventually Whistler. I know there is nothing on your page about the oilpatch, but you are clearly experienced, and have worked for several companies.

I'm not sure how to 'gracefully' leave my current company. I want them as a reference, and don't want them pissed at me. All I can think of at this time is to give a ton of advance notice, so they can have someone to replace me the moment I leave. As for the other end, I'm even less sure. There seems to be so much over such a relatively wide area, I don't even know where to go.

I want to experience camp work, perhaps in a water truck (assuming they even stay at camps with the others....I know nothing!). And then there is the horrifying notion of moving there without having a job waiting for me. That apparently has to be because the courses for the various certificates I would need can only be had out there.

I know this all seems erratic; just take it as a measure of my confusion. The only certainty for me is that I am tired of driving long-haul. I would appreciate any thoughts you have on any aspect of this; any advice you might offer.

Many thanks in advance.

Re. Whistler. A booming resort. Winter skiing and summer golf and hiking. Also summer skiing on the glacier. Currently preparing for the winter Olympics in 2010.

There is lots of work, including driving jobs. The problem, however is accommodation. Most people have to commute and the road is dangerous and has many delays because of construction.

Many people have moved to Pemberton, slightly north of Whistler, so, it too, is experiencing a construction boom.

If this is where you wish to be, then move out, find a place to live, then find a job.

The oil patch is a large area, stretching from Southern Sask. To Northern B. C. and into the NWT.

I could write many stories about my experiences in the North but am too busy working in the movies. (Currently driving a honey wagon on a pilot called `Intelligence.)

Currently the Oil Patch is experiencing a small boom, both summer and winter. Driving requires staying awake for long hours and working in axle deep mud or blizzard like conditions for hours on end.

These jobs are usually found by knocking on doors. Go to your main library, or on line, get a yellow pages for Edmonton or Ft. St. John. Look under `trucking.

Leaving your company is not a big problem. Put a note on the steering wheel that says they are cheap pricks, (I know they are because all highway companies pay far below what a driver is worth.) pack your bags and walk. Dont worry about finding a job or using them as a reference. There is such a shortage of idiots that are willing to sell their soul to run highway that any company will hire you in a heartbeat without a reference.

Quite often water truck drivers stay in the camps. This is how my sister met her husband. He was driving a water truck and she was a cook at the camp.

Your best bet is Alberta. They will probably recognize your Ont. Drivers license. B. C. probably wont. They would want you to rewrite your air ticket and retake a road test.

In short, take the bull by the horns. Give your boss 2 weeks, or 2 trips notice, pack your bags, drive to Edmonton, or points north. And check the yellow pages when you get there. Drop some dimes or knock on some doors.

If it is camp work you want then find a company that has a camp. Or a company that has trucks with sleepers. You can live in the truck until you find an apartment.

Alta. Is going to be your best bet and the camps are in the North. Start at Bonneyville, Ardmore, Ft. McMurray or along the Mackenzie Hwy. Just drive around the small towns until you see a water truck, talk to the driver or phone the number on the door.

Best of Luck.

I got to meet the man on the light, helped him take the balloon down and take the lights and gas out of it. The company he works for bought the light from Christy Lights in Vancouver. Actually, they bought all of the lights that Christy had. Christy no longer deals in lights. This company doesn't sell, only rents. The lights were made in France by All Star. Not sure if this is the company or not ALF SERVICE , Their website is a bit hard to navigate.

Here is an American Co. that might be able to help you, HIGH OUPUT, WebCrawler says they have balloon lights.

This is a Vancouver, Canada co. that rents, but they might tell you where they buy. ATOMIC2,

This site list many companies that sell new and used edquipment for the film industry LINKS 4 CAM

This is an Australian Co. MANDY.COM.

Here it is, I found it. AIRSTAR. This is the company that made the balloon I helped fold up, a 16 Ft. diameter balloon, fits in a small bag.

Hope this helps.

Good Morning,

in this link from you webpage FILM INDUSTRY PICTIONARY, I found the Bolloon Lights and I would like to know who sells them.

Could you facilitate me this information?

Thank's in advance

Edna R.

I worked, last night, on a movie called `Whisper'. They had a balloon light. I will be back there again tonight.

If the light is still there, and if I get a chance, I will ask the man in charge.

Using www.webcrawler.com, I came up with this, Panavision, balloon lights.

Lee,

Did you have any luck with EMREM as far as listing your timeshare rental.

Did you receive any inquiries and if so did you rent your place for the amount they told you it rented for.

I'm thinking about listing my timeshare with EMREM but they want a $397 lifetime up-front fee.

Ruben L.A, California, USA

REPLY

I am listed with EMREM and ICE and Condo World. Nothing from any of them.

Somehow I didnt expect it. They have thousands of people listing with them so I cant see how I would get singled out if they did get a request.

Guess, it is kind of like playing the lottery, you cant win if you dont play.

We are taking a Motorcycle trip in June to the island and coast of BC. Do you know of a place to park a pickup and trailer around Vancouver or Seattle for a week to 10 days?

Thank you for any help you can give us.

Marc 7 Romi C. Salt Lake City, Utah USA

REPLY

How's things in SLC? Was through there, either North or South, to and from Texas, about once a week for the first few months of this year.

Re Parking, Seattle would be very inconvenient. You might consider the ferry from Port Angeles, the Northern tip of the Olympia Peninsula, to Victoria, Southern tip of Vancouver Island. There might be parking there. Coho Ferry or Victora Express

If you come into Canada first and take the Ferry from Tsawwassen, Tsawwassen Ferries, just South of Vancouver, you have two choices, the mid island ferry to Nanaimo or the ferry to Victoria, (Swartz Bay). There is long term parking just East of the ferry terminal Ferry Parking.

Another choice is the Ferry just North West of Vancouver at Horseshoe Bay. That ferry will take you to the mid island town of Nanaimo. There is long term parking just East of the ferry termina, Ferry Parking.

I dont recommend the latter as you want to see the island. Therefore I suggest you start at Victoria, go through Nanaimo to Comox, and take the ferry to Powell River then work your way along the sunshine Coast, over two more ferries, to Horseshoe bay. Ferry Schedules.

For information about the areas you will visit along the way, Community Profiles.

Then if you still have time you could take a side trip to Whistler, before returning to your car in Tsawwassen or Port Angeles.

Or you can take a side trip North from Comox to Port Hardy, then catch the ferry to Powell River.

Great pictures on Sanya for a diving trip.

I had been diving in Canada, US, Hawaii, Australia, Maldives and the Caribbean Islands for the last 20+ years.

This is the first time I heard of anyone diving in China.

China had been restricted the citizens from diving due to political reasons.

I think they are now realizing the business potential of offering diving services in hotels and resorts.

I am planning a trip to Hainan Island for a relaxing vacation, and found your site about diving in China.

Now, my dream on "diving in China" can be realized soon.

thanks for your information.

Though China is still, essentially, a communist country, capitalism has taken a very strong hold over the last ten years.

With increasing trade relations between the Dominion of Canada and the Peoples Republic of China many changes have come about.

People are free to travel about within China.

Citizens are allowed to own homes and businesses.

Though there are still certain restrictions between Hong Kong and Mainland China you should find it relatively easy to visit the mainland.

Over the last few years I have traveled to several areas and seen some wondrous sights and met many interesting people.

We got "taken" in November, with the big promises of being able to rent each unit for $2500 a week (after deducting the maintenance fee).

What a complete scam.

We also have the "mazalten" place for 2 weeks, which I doubt will rent at all.

Then after signing up with a rental company suggested (Resorts international), we've heard nothing and I became aware that we'd just been taken again.

Anyway, I plan to list on some of the rent-by-owner type pages, but at $150-$180 a year, I won't want to list too much.

Perhaps we can help each other out on this somehow!

Our son has been in Ningbo since Aug. 2004 teaching at Wanli Uni. He has since married a young woman he met in Scotland 2 yrs ago who was completing a degree in England.

Long story short.. they fell in love, Cdn govt. anal about providing her with visitors visa, so he went to her.

Glad I could help.

Cdn govt. anal about providing her with visitors visa,

This is normal, as many people come on a visitors visa and then try to stay forever.

Hopefully Canada will now let her into the country as they are married and he is sponsoring.

It is quicker if he comes home by himself and sponsors her from here.

He needs to get a love letter from her at least once a month. They will want to see letters and phone bills. They will also want to see the letters he sends to her. They want to be sure they are marrying for love.

All the paper work can be done by himself. The forms are available off the website for Canada Immigration except the payment form which he will have to pick up at the office.

It may speed things up if he goes with her when she goes to the Canadian Embassy for her interview.

Never send money to a Canadian Embassy. Always send all payments to Ottawa. (Missisauga)

In the meantime, husband and I are thinking about exploring China ourselves.

Go, enjoy, it is a fantastic county. It is best if you have a friend to travel with who can read the menus, then you are not confined to the expensive tourist spots.

Here is a little story I forgot to add to my website.

When I went from Mazatlan to Manzanillo I didn't buy advance tickets, which my friend did, so I was unable to get on the bus with him because the busses were full on Sunday night.

Phil took the bus through Puerto Vallarta. An hour after he left I left, on a bus to Guadalajara.

Arriving in Guadalajara I ran into the depot and asked when the next bus left for Manzanillo.

I was told, 3 minutes. I bought a ticket, ran out and jumped on the bus.

I got to Manzanillo an hour before Phil.

The road through Vallarta is twisty and winding, the road to Guadalajara is freeway

Two other bus stories are my trip from Tuxpan to McAllen, Texas on my Tuxpan page,

and my trip to Barra De Navidad from Manzanillo.

I was up until 5 am researching everything online (something I should have done prior to signing).

I was lucky enough to have sent an email to the company when I started to get leery, at 11:59 pm, 1 minute until my 5 day waiver was up.

The same waiver that I thought that I had signed away. I figured if I was wrong about Mayan then I could always send them another email today to disregard my cancellation.

I got a message at home from the resort, confirming my cancellation and refund. I did save the tape though.

I think that if you are a person who travels extensively this might be a good option but for us, it just wasn't right.

I also felt that I was lied to right from the very start. Thus the feeling of being cheated.

You know though, it is a real shame. Their resorts are absolutely beautiful.

I think if they just tried to sell them honestly, and not inflating rental and resale value and lie, then the consumer could make a better decision and because of the resorts beauty they would sell themselves.

All in all, I will keep your email addy, in case, one day we would like to stay there and could perhaps negotiate a deal.

Best Wishes and thanks so much for getting back to me,

Liz

But I kept hemming and hawing, hoping I was still going to make money.

Finally I talked to them and traded for a smaller unit at a lower price.

I listed it with RCI last year and only got one call but they had mis listed my room size.

There are several websites full of people like us. They will sell you their time share for peanuts or rent it for cost.

Many are available on E Bay for peanuts.

If you bought for a profit you would have been further ahead to buy into Holiday Inn in whistler or a Canadian based time share.

On my time share resorts page, in the Related Web Sites section, I list a couple of websites where you can find information from others who have successfully forced the timeshares to give them a refund.

You will also find stories from people who have been happy with their time shares.

These "baked" lasagnas that you are refering to (Lasagna) are actually commercially made - the restaurants buy them in ......

In fact, if you get to know much about the food industry in canada - most places (including "bakeries" ) buy nearly everything they sell from frozen dough and pastry to frozen lasagnas, boxed soups and salads, etc etc.

It is disgusting.

It adds to my disgust to realize that 90 % or more of the patrons believe the dishes to be "made on site" and wouldn't know the difference anyway.

Allen & Jenny Victoria BC Canada

REPLY

This is one of my reasons for searching for a real Lasagna.

It is also one of the reasons it is so hard to find one.

A real lasagna takes a long time to prepare and thusly restaurants have to charge a high price.

Few people are willing to pay the price, therefore few restaurants are willing to make it.

But, the search continues.

Great. Let me know how you find it. I find sometimes it's the simple

pasta that tastes the best, as long as it is made right.

REPLY

I had to phone them a couple of times to get directions. They told me it wasnt the same business or address as A-Wear Clothing but you have to go through the clothing store to get to the caf which is in the back of the store, sort of like the cafeteria was inside Eatons.

I forgot my camera but it wasnt much to take a picture of. Just some pasta on a plate with no trimmings.

It didnt look like lasagna. More like an omelet. Maybe 2 layers of noodles and one of sauce and one of cheese.

The sauce was plain, though fairly meaty.

The taste was flat, no spices of any kind.

The ambience was Ok.

Nice modern styling with a clean uncluttered look and the clothing store to look at.

The price was a bit high and the portion was a bit small.

The glass was average size and fairly full of a good red wine.

My companion had pizza and he said it was very tasty though whole wheat crust.

hi,

i;m just having a look at all your pictures while i am waiting for people to check out.

real nice!!

you have a pretty interesting web site.

i can see i will have to vist this site quite alot of times to see everything.

i would like to read your book.

i can see you have been pretty busy in the last 20 years, you make my life seem pretty boring.

i think it is great that you have experienced all the things you were telling me about.

i wouldn't have the guts to try anything new unless i didn't have a choice. I like ruts and security (just call me chicken).

I'm going to read your autobiography now and i am sure it is going to be very interesting.

I just wrote you a lengthily comment but I will try to do it again in this email.

I am a travel agent and I have clients staying at Suzhou and a tour to Xi Tang was recommended. I found your web site and it gave me a pretty good idea of the area - it sounds very neat.

I have these clients arriving from Shanghai by a train that tours different things on the way to Suzhou. I was wondering if there is anything else for them to do in Suzhou.

Update from the Burn Camp Ride.

Jerry R. had a meeting with the good folks from BC Professional Fire Fighters Burn Fund.

This year the children are going to assemble at the Burnaby Fire Fighters Training Center at the corner of Spirling & Canada Way.

The unveiling of Jerrys new burn camp Harley, built at Deeley's, will be at the Burnaby Fire Fighters Training Center 11:30 AM on Sunday the 25th of July.

The Burn Camp Ride registration will take place at Trev Deeley Motorcycles between Noon & 1:PM with the ride leaving for Brackendale at 1:PM.

Lunch is being prepared by the White Spot Restaurant and available with the children at the Brackendale Camp about 2:PM.

After lunch we will be taking the kids for rides. After the rides, the award ceremonies, you remember the kids choose their favorite Hot Rod and Motorcycle then we are off for home.

In short be prepared for a long day

I sure hope this has been helpful information.

The crab you pictured is a land carb not a stone crab.

When i was a child living in Cardenas in the 1950's we used to accidently run over hundreds of land crabs in low lying areas during mating season.

Cardenas had more land crabs than any place I have ever seen.

I really enjoyed seeing the pictures from a place lost in time.

Coindidently, i am going to Cuba next week for the first time since I left in 1961.

I plan to visit Cardenas, hence my search on the internet.

My wife and I will be honeymooning in Ixapa between 3/14-3/21 and we are so looking forward to venturing to Barra...

We have lots of school supplies for the children and would like to know where or how we are to find the "Librarian"?

I am so bummed that we had already booked our entire honeymoon before finding Barra, which sounds like what you would find at the end of the rainbow! And now, with all our research, we want Barra to be the highlight of our Honeymoon.

We have never left the US and we consider ourselves nervous travelers, but we feel we have to make it to Barra to make it PERFECT!!!

If you could, let us know how we should meet up with Laura to leave our supplies.

It was interesting and informative to read all about the different names for the Long Beach at Barra de Potosi, which is where my husband and I are heading in a little over a week. This will be our 3rd trip. We are fortunate to stay with our good friends from Bamfield which also own a place just beside the B. de P. Hotel and live there six months of the year.

Also, it was good to get an update of the new library and I was surprized to learn that Laura is the librarian.

IT IS A VERY NICE WEB PAGE, VERY BUSY.

I enjoyed your scuba video, etc.

Perhaps you can join us, 1 year from now, Jan. 2005.

My backpackers' tour is priced around $1850 all inclusive

20 days and 19 nights in the Philippines, not including the time of air travel days.

INCLUDED air, transfers, motel, meals, tours.

If I get more than 30 people I can reduce the price and or keep the Bus with us at all times.

It is a backpackers, soft, adventure tour. I only promise a clean bed and running water when it is available.

We visit an aboriginal terrace-caribou farm to experience primitive living for 2 days then move onto more refreshing resorts etc.

We see how people live and earn a living.

We visit fish pond industries, bus factories, farms etc, and lots of little Ma & Pa resorts.

If you fit the right demographics it will be as Gordon said, The best vacation he ever had as a first time visitor".

Luxury can be provided but it is not encouraged as we go slightly off the beaten track.

It is designed for a happy group that gets along well and dont mind sharing accommodations.

is there any way I could travel across USA as a fare paying passenger on trucks.

I am male, retired air traffic controller, and I have had some previous Greyhound trips using their Ameripass.

Mark (York, England, United Kingdom)

REPLY

I have never heard of such a thing. I know many people hitchhike and ride for free.

I have hitchhiked for many miles and often ridden in rigs. Sometimes I would pay the driver by taking a turn behind the wheel and letting him sleep.

It is seldom a big rig will stop along a road but if you catch them while they are at a truck stop

Watch as the rigs roll in and see if they came from the direction opposite to which you want to travel, then offer to pay for their meal.

Check the name on the side of the truck. If it is a large-company truck the driver will usually say no, his company doesnt allow riders. Quite often they will have a partner in the bunk and no room for you. You will, however, find the odd driver that will ignore company rules because he is lonely and wants someone to talk to. No one likes to talk more then a truck driver.

They spend hours by themselves and love to find an ear to chew on.

Your best bet, however, is with the independent owner operators. They, too, have insurance companies that say, `no riders, but are more inclined to carry a passenger, especially if you are willing to buy a meal or pay for some fuel.

No one is more short on funds than an owner operator.

However all of these negotiations would have to be made on the road, or in a truck stop, in the morning. And each trip would take you in a separate direction for one day, as each trucker wants his truck to himself when he beds down for the night.

I know of no way that you could make any sort of arrangements from England.

Perhaps one of my readers has a better answer for you. If so I will post it here. Also check some of the links to other trucker sites at the bottom of my truckers page.

hi,bear It's so nice to meet you at the trip of Hainan, it's also my pleasure to visit your website and read your articles, which can enrich my knowlege.

There is a acient Chinese essay:" walk a long long trip, as well as read a huge book."

i like to travel, sport. i like the gold-sand beach, warm-clean sea either!

thanks to share so many wonderful things with your reader.

thanks a lot and wish you have a good time at X'mas!

if you need any help in shanghai, just call me whenever you want! i'll heip you!

P.S: a question, could you tell me wihich beach-city you like best? Cancun, Sanya, or Haiwei why?

Yao Gang (Shanghai, PR, China)

REPLY

you asked me that when we were walking on that beautiful sandy beach West of Sanya, I am sorry I didnt get a chance to answer you.

At that time it was difficult for me to answer because the water was so crystal blue and I hadnt been in it yet.

Of course we werent allowed to swim there, and I dont know why, perhaps it had a bad drop off, or a bad undertow.

After that we went swimming in the beach near Sanya and I can truthfully say, I wasnt happy with the water at Sanya.

Much too cold for my liking.

The beach was a lovely soft sand but unfortunately it was too disturbed by all the swimmers so the water was very dirty. Perhaps the divers on the reef found it clear.

I have never been to Hawaii.

The beaches near Zihuatanejo and Cancun, Mexico are lovely as are the beaches near Veradero, Cuba.

They are however coral beaches, not sand, and the little specks stick to your skin.

I found the waters in all three to be silty, not really clear like the colder waters of B. C. , Canada. But they are warmer, I can scuba dive with only a T-shirt.

City wise. I hate cities, so I instantly fell in love with Zihuatanejo, Mexico. It is a lovely town with a lovely beach and lovely people and if you want night life and plastic trappings it is only a few miles from the large resorts of Ixtapa.

If you like cities, Cancun is fantastic, with everything from low price hotels near the people to large resorts full of tourists

Veradero I didnt like, just a large tourist resort, much like Ixtapa, Mexico

I can remember, as a youngster, that the traditional POPPY sold on Nov. 11 was red with a "BLack" center. Then, several years ago, the center was changed to "GREEN". Then, all of a sudden, the center was changed to Black once again.

Can you please give me the dates of the change to "GREEN" and then the change back to "BLACK".

I am very interested in these dates, as I am doing an album of different happenings from the wars.

Can you supply me with this information?

Trusting to hear from you and thanking you for reading my request, I remain,

Sincerely,

Molly. (Brantford, Ontario, Canada)

Thank you for reading my Poppy Story.

I am sorry, I have no idea.

Originally, the Poppy had a black centre.

In 1980 it was changed to green.

In 2002 it was changed back to black at the request of the Legion's members.

I hope this helps.

Hi!

I found your (Bio) page while surfing for `Hazenmore' and note that your mother was Amy Clarke.

We are presently compiling a Hazenmore history book and would love a submission on the Clarke family - also Harry Earley.

I, too, attended school at Cananea but later than your mother.

I will wait to hear from you.

u.s.

Hi.

One of my best canine companions was named Lee.

I took him everywhere, camping, kayaking, x-country skiing. Unfortunately, he died 2 years ago. Very sad.

But, I camp in the Adirondacks every season, and often we hear and see the big, big, fluffy black bears.

Last summer I went with a friend (who says she will never go again) and we were visited by easily a 600 pound male we named Bernie. Thrilling, but a little scary.

Anyway, I have been planning to go to Cuba for about 5 years. I've wanted to stop working (at least temporarily) and see if I could do something like a venceramos-60s type trip.

BUT, 2.5 years ago I was diagnosed with advanced (stage-III) ovarian cancer, and although I beat the AMA's prediction that I'd be dead by now, I am stuck in the northeast because of weekly treatments.I am taking chemotherapy but I am also doing Chinese herbs which seem to ward off the toxic effects of the chemo.

I'm thinking I will either take a vacation from treatment for a few weeks to go to Cuba, or I will wait until I switch back again to monthly treatments, or whatever.

In the meantime, I'm doing research to learn as much as I possibly can about the Cuban people in 2003 and about their country. Which brings me to your site....

I think your pics are terrific and I could almost smell the rain on the road and the salt air on the beach.

I would've liked more pics of the Cuban people doing some activities like working, playing, or even resting.

I have great love for the Cuban revolution, and I had great distain for the Batista/USA government that was taken down by brave women and men.

It amazes me that in only a few decades, President Castro has been able to bring the country from a 95% illiteracy rate to a 97% literacy rate. I find that to be truly wonderful, and I certainly feel more proud of that (even though I'm not a Cuban) than I have ever felt about anything any of our US presidents (or their administration) has done.

Also, I would have liked to see some pics of the billboards that are depicting Che Guevarra, mainly because I've had a tremendous crush on him ever since I read his Autobiography and his Motorcycle Diary. I remember the day he was killed and my heart broke apart for his comrades. I often wonder how he would have aged, physically and emotionally, and how he would now look in his 70's.

Or, do they not have billboards of leaders anymore?

The only other comment I want to make is that I wonder if when you write about Cuban if you have ever seen the devastation of our US cities.....like the South Bronx for instance, where children go shoeless in the winter, where the cops use elementary school children to sell drugs, where families are starving because social services have been totally cut and Bush is giving all of us $400 to take care of our children. Hmmmm. That's a little more than a dollar a day.

I DON'T THINK SO !!!! (I'm not trying to say that there is a hierarchy of poverty, but I think it's important to recognize that Cuban is not, unlike the US, the richest nation in the world.)

By the way, I read and liked your piece on abortion. I was in Toronto when the first abortion doctor was shot down. We demonstrated for days.

Thanks for this opportunity to see Cuba through your eyes. Here are some questions:

  • 1. How much did your room cost?
  • 2. Is it easy to get to snorkeling spots on your own or is being part of a group something that has to happen?
  • 3. Did you get to do any dancing or go to any music clubs? What are they like?
  • 4. Is the ice cream really shitty now? Damn!
  • 5. Have you ever been to Belize?
  • 6. Did you see meet any Cuban social workers or Cuban doctors?

    Peace,

    Barbara

big, big, fluffy black bears.... I'm big, bald, & white.

600 pound male we named Bernie. ... I'm almost 1/2 of that. He must have been very friendly if he told you his name.

more pics of the Cuban people .. Me too, but I actually saw very few. It rained most of the time and it was off season.

great love for the Cuban revolution ... It amazes me how well they have done, yet despite the hardships imposed by the US they continue to use US currency.

billboards of leaders anymore? ... Don't recall any but wasn't looking for them. In Varadero, I don't recall any billboards at all.

unlike the US, the richest nation ... Actually the US is broke and any money they do have is used to promote the falsehood that they aren't. They are much too busy trying to tell the rest of the world how to cure their ills to take the time to cure their own.

  • 1. I never really knew, it was a package deal, included the price of the plane from Cancun.
  • 2. Don't think so, but I never tried.
  • 3. No, never saw any.
  • 4. Nestles, everyone seems to have gone to nestles, have no idea what they had before.
  • 5. Is on my list, was going to go this winter, still may.
  • 6. No. Saw and met very few Cuban people.

I was actually very disappointed with my trip and plan to go back when the weather is nicer. Next time I will avoid the hotel zone.

    Help!

My wife and I enjoyed a visit to Vancouver recently. What a beautiful place. While there we enjoyed strolling thru Gastown.

At one of the small jewelry stores there she saw a pair of earrings that she really liked, but did not buy. I have looked here but cannot find any like them. The pair was sterling silver, post earrings. It was a simple siloute of a bear (not teady bear) with a small diamond where the eye would be.

It was nothing fancy, but she has mentioned more than once that she wished she had purchased them. I would like to try to get them and surprise her.

Can you help me locate them? Any assistance would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

    `3/10/1

    ANSWERS TO SPECIFIC QUESTIONS

Lee - Wow! Thanks for the quick response.

Yes, the earrings were post. Not dangly ... as I recall them. They were a simple silhouette of thin (fairly thin) sterling silver with a small diamond were the eye would be. The bear was not standing on it hind legs, but rather on all four ... so to speak considering it was a silhouette. As for where the store was located ... that's a tough one since my wife hit probably every store along that street. It was along the main street through Gastown (same street the steam clock is on). As I recall there was more than one jewelry store along that street. But I am sure it was a jewelry store as opposed to another type of store that also sold some jewelry. It seems the store was beyond (south?) the steam clock.

Any help is appreciated. If I can find and buy the earrings, I will score some MAJOR points with my wife.

Thanks again and have a great day.

    `3/10/2

Lee - Thanks again for the response. We spent two days in Vancouver the end of this past August. So we were just there. What a beautiful city! We had a great time and hope to return someday soon to spend more time there and in Victoria.

Having given this more thought I think the store would have been between the brew pub/restaurant (across the parking lot from the train station) and the steam clock. Seems there were two or three small jewelry stores in that block. As you walk towards the clock the stores would be on the left. That might be east, but I am not sure as I completely lost my sense of direction while there. Not sure about the price ... possibly close to $200.00.

Hopefully they can send me a picture of the earrings so that I can be sure of getting the correct pair.

Again, thank you for your help. Hope you have an enjoyable, relaxing weekend.

    Take care.

    Tom

    `3/10/2

Lee - Its possible that the store was in the next block (that begins with Starbucks ... geez you folks have one of those on EVERY corner!). But I don't think so.

    Thanks again for the help.

REPLY - Garth (my bud) and I, went for a long walk yest, eventually ending up in gastown.

We started at the Brew Pub and skipped a couple of stores that were mostly clothing and hadn't found it by the time we got to the steam clock so we checked in every store to the end of gastown and then started up the other side of the street, asking everyone, until we were back to the start and then just to make sure I checked in the clothing stores.

Lee - Thank you very much for going to all the trouble to track down the bear earrings. The e-mails came through fine as did the attachments.

The picture of the bear necklace (with the big dipper in diamonds) looks like the earrings ... only (as you said) with one small diamond. I will try to contact Suraj to see if they can send me a picture of the earrings so that I can be certain.

If I pull this off, I can assure you that my wife will be delighted. Sure hope it was a pretty day for a stroll in Gastown.

Were the earrings actually in a jewelry store or was it another type of store?

Also, hope you did not go to a lot of trouble and thank you again for your efforts.

    Take care.

    * The e-mails came through fine as did the attachments.

    Good.

    * The picture of the bear necklace (with the big dipper in diamonds) looks like the earrings ...

There are identical post earings. These are not the ones you were asking about.

    * only (as you said) with one small diamond.

Not a small diamond but a smaller bear.

    * I will try to contact Suraj to see if they can send me a picture of the earrings so that I can be certain.

There is another style, the bear looks the same but is smaller and only one diamond in his tummy, not in his eye, the head is too small, the earing is only about 3/8 in. Very discrete, very lovely.

    * If I pull this off, I can assure you that my wife will be delighted.

Yes, I am sure, they are lovely. Wish I had someone special to buy them for

    * Sure hope it was a pretty day for a stroll in Gastown.

It was cloudy but warm. and I had not spent time with my bud for a long time.

    * Were the earrings actually in a jewelry store or was it another type of store? Also,

It was a souvenir shop, mostly clothing, a small section of jewelery.

    * hope you did not go to a lot of trouble

it was a good outing, good exercise, which I badly need.

    * and thank you again for your efforts.

    You are welcome.

    `3/10/7

After looking at the brochure you sent I decided to try to contact Aurora Jewellery directly. I promptly got an e-mail back from Dennis Breymann their National Sales Manager. He sent pictures of the earrings and necklace. The earrings look exactly as I remember. I am corresponding with him to purchase at least the earrings.

Thank you so much for your help. My wife will be very surprised and pleased.

Take care and best wishes always.

As a matter of fact, if I can remember, and if I can give you the directions.

I don't know the name of it, or the name of the street.

Go to the old city temple, walk around it so that you are behind it.

Seems to me I was facing the entrance to the Old City Temple, turned to the right, went to the end of the block, turned left and walked to the next intersection, it was across the street, to the right.

Look for a tall building called the suitcase and handbag, accessories market.

Or something like that. It is a long name.

Each floor is a total collection of suitcases or handbags and other leather products.

The main floor was millinery supplies.

    Glad you enjoyed Lee's Page.

As you can see from my Vancouver Page there are so many things to do.

I was riding on the little ferry in False Creek, taking pictures for my Seawall story, on Saturday, and met a couple from New Jersey. They had found an article in the New York Times. How to see Vancouver in two days. One of the things was a ride on a ferry in False Creek.

The majority of the attractions in Vancouver are scattered all over and not really within walking distance.

However, you can find a lot of night life in the downtown area where most of the hotels are.

Also, within a few blocks of the downtown core are: Gastown; ferries in False Creek; Stanley Park; the Seawall; which, almost, surrounds the downtown core; China Town; TinselTown, on the West end of China Town, has several large stadium-style-seating theatres, if you want to catch a movie; Granville Island, just a short ride on a ferry; Lonsdale Quay, a short ride on the SeaBus; and of course the SkyTrain, which will take you through: Vancouver; Burnaby; New Westminster; Whalley; and into Surrey, with some spectacular views, day or night.

Also from the down town area you can catch a taxi or tour bus that will take you to further points of interest, and there is always the Vancouver Trolley Co, that will take you on a tour around the downtown, Stanley Park area.

Within the downtown core are many hotels with a large range of prices: Comfort Inn; Best Western; Days Inn; Fairmont (Formerly CP.) Holiday Inn; Howard Johnson; Hyatt; Ramada; Sandman; Sheraton; Travelodge; Westin; plus many others, all within a few blocks of each other.

If you stay at the right one you could be rubbing elbows with a movie star.

Vancouver isn't called `Hollywood North' for nothing.

Hope this helps, if not, write me back.

I have a sign on the highway near where I live and it says "no jaking".

Do you know what this means?

    Many thanks,

    Kathy

    REPLY

To a trucker it means that there is a hill ahead, in the direction of down.

So be sure your Jaks (Jacobs Engine Brakes) are turned on so your brakes aren't overheated when you have to stop at the intersection, which is invariably, at the bottom of the hill.

To the government, and the citizens that live near the hill, it means that truckers should turn their jake brakes off.

So the noise of the jaks won't disturb their peaceful community.

The loud explosion that occurs when the truck load of air craft fuel can't stop for the red light at the bottom of the hill is acceptable, as it is not a daily occurrence.

    NOTE:

Many motorists, and politicians, believer that Jacob's Brakes are simply a noise maker and are often a substitute for a horn.

Jacob's Brakes are what they say, brakes, made by the Jacob's Company.

Like the brakes on a car, they are used to slow down big trucks, and busses.

They are a supplement to the main braking system.

Some cities have put up signs, saying, `It is prohibited to use engine brakes'.

They soon find out in court that you can not tell a motorist not to use his brakes.

In B. C. the Motor Vehicle Act prohibits a peace officer from directing a motorist to operate his vehicle in an unsafe manner.

What could be more unsafe than telling a trucker not to use his brakes?

Often when a truck comes up behind a car a motorist will hear the roar of the Jake Brakes and hit his brake pedal, "Bark at me will you".

Then he wonders why his roof comes down on his head as the truck rolls over his car.

If a truck has his Jake Brakes on and you look in your mirror and all you can see is his grill, the last thing you want to do is cause your vehicle to go any slower because the roar of the Jakes tells you that the trucker is using all his braking power to keep from running into you.

Now you are going to tell me that many trucks run with out Jake Brakes.

Yes, they do, out on the prairies and in the states.

The next time you go to L. A., ask a member of the California Highway Patrol, "How many times a day do you see trucks flying down the Grape Vine Hill with flames coming out from his tires".

We have many more, and bigger, hills, in B. C. but truckers seldom flame out because they let their Jake Brakes bear the load rather than their mechanical brakes.

Next you are going to ask me, "Why are Jake Brakes so noisy"?

For the same reason that motorcycles are noisy.

The riders, or drivers, like the noise, or don't want to spend the money on a new exhaust system.

They run their vehicles with inadequate mufflers, or straight pipes.

Though bikers will tell you it is a safety feature, other motorists can hear you coming, the truth is, it ads to the thrill of the ride.

A truck or a motorcycle, equipped with proper mufflers, will purr like a kitten, even with the Jacob's Brake's on.

I found your site on a random search on Tuxpam.

I was based there for two months while working on a geophysical survey back in the fall of '99. That was an interesting year. It was early October and had been raining a lot. The crew had rented a house (a four storey mansion, to be accurate) on a side street, but the bedrooms were full, so I was booked in to the May Palace. It's a plain, but clean and nice hotel, with a decent restaurant and friendly staff.

The rain continued. I set up my computer at the crew house the next morning and got to work with the staff: a couple Canadians, a couple Australians, a couple Chileans, and a Mexican.

    And the rain continued.

The second morning after I arrived, I noticed water filling the street beyond the corner where I turned up to the house. It looked like a water main had burst. Later that morning someone came in and said the river had overflowed. He had pictures on his digital camera.

You have a picture of the Rio Tuxpam on your site, looking upriver along the seawall. That's what I saw when I arrived, but now the river was completely over the wall and spilling into the downtown streets.

The house, luckily, was up a hill and out of the water's path. We continued working. Heading back to the hotel at the end of the day, though, meant weaving our way through side streets, looking for a dry path. A slight rise in the road in front of the hotel was still dry, but not for long. The water continued to rise, bringing the river's current with it. Predictably, the power went out; candles were supplied to all the guests. The restaurant stayed open - they must have had a backup generator - but were conserving food (the flooding at this point was covering most of the gulf states of Mexico, making roads impassable and flying impossible). All they were serving was chicken. One guest at the next table asked for shrimp. The waitress took his order, and when it was ready, put the plate of chicken in front of him, saying "there's your shrimp!".

It was fascinating to watch the waters rise that night, peaking at probably two or three feet in front of the hotel, but much deeper elsewhere. The next morning, the rain had stopped and I ventured out. The street was almost dry in front of the hotel, but in many areas it was still very deep. Down a side street I saw a small powerboat acting as a water taxi. Several professional photographers were out taking pictures of this sudden and fleeting "Venice of Mexico", pictures they would later sell on the street outside their shops.

Days passed before the streets were passable again, weeks before most areas of the town fully dried out. But with the river waters had come silt and sand. The army was called in to shovel it all out, while very heavily armed police (municipal, state, and federal) kept order. I'm not sure how necessary such a display of weaponry was; people seemed fairly calm about the whole situation. The police certainly outgunned the army by a wide margin!

I don't remember how long it was before power was restored to the hotel. It wasn't for several days, possibly more than a week. That didn't bother me; I'm not usually bothered by much anyway.

Eventually a sort of normalcy was restored and we carried on our work. The Chileans had found a good place to eat: a vacant corner lot turned at night into an outdoor restaurant by street vendors. They put out tables in the lot, and you could choose from several carts. Usually, we had fried pork tacos. These were real tacos, very very different from what you'll find here. This was a few blocks west (upriver) from the main plaza.

Tuxpam is a fairly modern town, in a region that is relatively wealthy thanks to agriculture and Pemex. I did see one wonderful anachronism, though. While I was sitting outside a restaurant in the central plaza, a farmer rode up on a horse (or maybe it was an ass; it's been a while), with milk urns (what do you call those big silver milk containers?) attached to the saddle, rode up the street and stopped beside the window of the restaurant. Someone from the shop passed out a large container and the farmer filled it, then rode on.

I could say much more about my time in Tuxpam and the surrounding area, but I think I've already been too long-winded. For anyone contemplating a visit, I'd recommend it. The people there were very nice, the town was beautiful and exciting (compared to Canadian or American towns, anyway). Just don't go during the rainy season!

    Cheers,

One of the best set of web pages, I've ever seen! I could spend hours looking at them.

We've been to Mexico 7 times Cancun, Cabo, PV, and Isla Mujeres. We absolutely loved the ISLA........

I really wan to go back. I am also looking at ZIHUATANEJO too. Just can't decide.

Which is your favorite place in Mexico and why?

I'm just curious because you said, "Before I left Canada I was told to go to Isla first. I said I would save the best for the last. I was right. After Cancun, Cuba, & Cozumel, Isla is the best."

I can't decide between Zihua and Isla.

    Thanks, Ken in San Jo

    REPLY

First, thank you for the compliment.

    Secondly, I can't decide.

When I said the best for the last I was referring to my trip of Cancun, Cozumel, Cuba, and Isla.

If you haven't been to Zihua. you owe it to yourself to go.

Myself, I will go to both, again, and probably again.

Yup, and should be against the law. But I have never heard of such a law and I am sure no politician gives a dam. But you might want to write to the guy you voted, or didn't, for, the last election and explain to him what needs to be done.

Is the water safe to drink, or do you suggest sticking with bottled water?

Any suggestions on how to avoid getting diarrhea while in Zihuatanejo?

    Nicholas

    Greenville, NC

    REPLY

As far as I know the water is not safe.

Most hotels will put one or two small bottles in your room each day. Others will have a large bottle in the lobby.

When I am away from the hotel I may have to buy a small one to get me through the day but normally I will refill the small one sin the lobby or buy a big jug and keep it in your room for refilling the small ones.

Best price on the big ones is the military PX (Open to the public.).

Drinking bottled water is the only precaution I took. I ate in amy cafe and never worried about it.

    Hello Lee,

I'm not sure if we've met, my name is Wendy and I work at the Trev Deeley Motorcycle Collection. Franois, who also works here with me gave me your business card and told me to check out your website.

You've done a fantastic job with your site. \

    Thank you for the exposure!

Franois also told me to let you know if there was anything that needed correcting. I came across a few things that perhaps you didn't know or haven't had time to change:

I am sad to say that Trev Deeley passed away March 28, 2002. He had just turned 82.

There is no longer a store in Whistler, it has been gone for some time, at least over a year.

We also no longer have a full time technician that works at the Collection. When we moved from the other side of the building a couple of years ago we said goodbye to the restoration facility. Fred Pazaski and his nephew Leo Ruswick work from home on any projects we need work done on.

The Steve McQueen Triumph is actually a 1963 not a 1968. Our brochure incorrectly identified this bike, we wanted to see if you were paying attention. It is not one that we own, it is on loan from Del West (and he was paying attention).

Thank you very much Lee, for all the time and hard work you've put into your website. Franois and I hope to see you soon.

    Keep up the great work!

Tuxpan is not a tourist attraction, for foreigners.

The main tourist attraction, for Mexicans, is the beach.

On the street to the Playa, near the Eastern end, you can find a dive shop and arrange for some suba diving.

I am told, one should take one of the small boats across from the market, or you can cross over the bridge.

Apparently there is a nice museum over there, as well as more stores, and, in the summer a large fair.

And don't forget El Centro on Saturday night.

Wish I was going with you.

    Enjoy.

    Hi!

I have no idea how old your page is, but I went there looking for info on the old Polar bears who were in the Stanley Park Zoo for many years, specifically their names.

On the page , I noticed the following:

    1) I don`t think the top picture is of any place in Stanley park; looks much more like California, Hawaii, or Florida to me!

    2) I think your historical note is also a bit off; prior to 1886, the Park belonged to the Government of Canada, and prior to that to the Colony of British Columbia and the Royal Navy. It was largely intact, consisting mostly of "old growth" trees, due to the Naval connection; it was a forest reserve specifically set aside for the cutting of masts, spars, and timbers for RN sailing ships.

At least, that was my grandfather`s story, and it appears that way in several "authoritative" histories of the City. (I also inherited from him a walking stick made from the wooden wreckage of the SS Beaver, the steam side-wheeler belonging to the Hudson`s Bay Company, that sank at Prospect Point (Stanley Park) in 1888.)

    Hope this helps! --

(Reply)Took me awhile to come across it, forgot I had started that page. It`s not very old, just barely started.

1: (Reply)Actually the picture is Varadero, Cuba. Must have used that page as a template.

2: (Reply) I believe it still belongs to Ottawa. Vancouver Park Board rents it for $1.00 a year on a 100 year lease.

Quote from the Parks Board Page ( http://r.searchhippo.com/r3.php?i=1&q=canada+b.c.+stanley+park&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.city.vancouver.bc.ca%2F ) In 1886 Vancouver`s first City Council made a momentous decision by petitioning the Federal Government to lease 1,000 acres of a largely logged peninsula for park and recreation purposes.

I believe it had been logged for the timber to build the trestle which carried the train past what is now Canada Place, to mine the coal from coal harbour. However, I don`t believe, the mining never took place.

The Park Board told me that it had been logged 3 times before they got it. There were many houses built on it, some of them in use today as; storage, offices, and residences for Park Board equipment, and staff.

1865 Captain Edward Stamp logs 100 acres around what is now known as Brockton Point providing a clearing for settlement.

I also found this website which gives a good, short, history of the park. http://www.discovervancouver.com/GVB/stanley-park.asp

Hi, I found your site very interesting and before I pose any questions of detail, perhaps you could just give me one small bit of advice.

My wife and mother want to travel to the Far East on vacation and are not seasoned travellers, per se. Is Shanghai safe and easy for an active 78 year old woman to visit along with my wife?

    Appreciate your assistance.

Also, wishing you a merry Xmas and a happy New Year.

    Reply:

In my limited experience, I would say yes, as safe as any travel can be. The big problem is the language, there is little usage of anything other than Mandarin, and Shanghainese.

    Greetings:
I think that you missed the point when you `saw` Cardenas. I lived there for five months in 2000, when I did research for my Master`s degree, visited again in late 2001 for two weeks and will be back there in 2002. The town has approximately 90,000 occupants, many of them employed in the tourism industry. This is where they live. There is a thriving commercial core area and there are many industries located in its economic environs. These include an oil refinery (between Sta. Marta and Cardenas), a paper plant, and a rum factory just to name a few. There are also many small industries including a milk processing plant, an ice cream factory, a ceramics plant and so forth. There has also been a building boom on as many people are relocated from Varadero to Cardenas. Many of the boarded up buildings are under construction, Cuban style!
Cardenas, along with the rest of Cuba has struggled under the conditions of the Revolutions, American Embargo and withdrawal of Soviet economic aid. Still, had you looked a little closer you would see that what remains is a thriving town with people who every single day demonstrate their ingenuity for getting on with the business of life. Many do earn or get most of their dollars from foreigners and this is why the town (that you admit has few tourists) can support more than a dozen dollar only restaurants and about forty dollar only shops! The poor people in Cuba do not have access to dollars and therefore cannot support such an economy. Cheers and have a great day.

(REPLY) I admit I`m not sure how much of Cardenas I saw. I was driven up and around many streets for an hour which only gave me a general idea of the town. I never saw a commercial district but saw many empty and boarded up buildings, stores, houses, and factories.
I didn`t include the oil industry as it is on the outskirts of Santa Martha , a good distance from Cardenas. As well I am told it is not a refinery, but a storage facility. All the refining is done in Venezuela.
I tell about it in my Santa Martha story.
The only paper and rum plant I saw were many miles away, to the West of Mantanzas. (Pictures can be found in my La Havana story )
Had I looked a little closer, I would have love to, and will, when I return to Varadero.

I see that you run a web site on cuba, and since this was the first time I was going to that island, thought I would ask about Oil. It seems to me that oil would smell if it was refined close to Veradero. Is this the case?? Should I select a place to visit at the far end of the beach resort?? What would you suggest. I was hoping to leave for Cuba in early Feb, and come back in march sometime.
    Thanks,
    Scott from Ottawa

(REPLY) I was told that the oil is actually refined in Venezuela. The crude and the refined products are stored near Varadero, just East of Santa Martha.
I rode in an open cab past the storage facilities, and enjoyed the smell. (Those of us who were raised around the refineries in Edmonton like the smell.) It brought back memories, of pleasant summer days when the neighbour`s roof was being re-tarred, and of driving tank truck in Northern Alberta, hauling crude.
I stayed at the hotel that is closest to Santa Martha and would have noticed the smell if it had been there. The breezes come from the East, bringing fresh salt air from the Mar Caribe.
    Enjoy your trip,
    Lee in Vancouver.

    Dear Lee;
I have just spent an enjoyable hour cruising your web site on Cuba and Mexico. Thanks for the great pictures and humerous dialogue. I have passed your web site on to other family members interested in Cuba. I found your site on the isla-mujseres.net message board.
My husband and I have travelled extensively in the Yucatan many times since first visiting there in 1984. We go every year sometimes twice a year. We have also been to PV, Acapulco and Ixtapa, but the Cancun area is the best. The ocean is by far the most beautiful in CC. Four years in a row `95 `96 `97 & `98 we stayed on Isla Mujeres for 2 months at a time.
    Thanks again.

    Hey there,
saw your post on the message board for Isla and read your Cancun trip report. well done by the way. Just wondering the price of the `jungle tour`. I`m not much of a `tour` gal as we usually take the local transportation and avoid all kinds of `tours`...BUT, we are bringing down 3 `newbie` couples to Isla and have tossed around the idea of the jungel sea trek thru Aqua tours...is that this same one? Anyway, just wondering what the price range is and how long the entire day lasted. Thanks muchly,

    > Hey there, Darcy from Alberta,
your Cancun trip report. well done by the way.
    * Thanks, not done actually, only the two sidebars, was thinking of working on it today but got sidetracked on doing one for Vancouver.
Just wondering the price of the `jungle tour`.
    * Sorry, have searched all my receipts and haven`t got it.
I`m not much of a `tour` gal as we usually take the local transportation and avoid all kinds of `tours`.
    * Usually I do too but thought I would splurge the last trip, glad I did.
    > jungel sea trek thru Aqua tours.
    * Not sure, they have so many names, but any kiosk on the street will have it. Just don`t pay what they first ask, start to walk away, say you`ll think abut it, watch the price come down.
how long the entire day lasted.
    * Not a whole day but it kills the whole day what with transportation etc. Easily doable on a day trip over from Isla. Take the combi into Cancun from Puerto Juarez for $4 and the Hotel Zone bus from down town for $6. $=Pesos.

Hi! I am from Varadero and lived there until I was ten years old. I currently live now in Miami. Your web site brought many beautiful memories of my beloved Cuba. Back when I was there in 1979 there were a lot fewer hotels and Varadero was wild and virgin. The sand was even whiter than now with crabs and iguanas roaming freely specially beyond the xanadu area towards punta hicacos. The ice cream place still existed but I do not think they served nestle back then although I loved their ice creams. Nightlife was still there and music was always playing from loud speakers in the hotes and parks. The beach was lined with australian pines and there was plenty of seagrapes to eat. I hope to also go back one day.

We winter on n. Padre and have been thinking about driving into Mex. but have heard it`s a risk.
Is there a road south of Brownsville and is it passable and safe?
Wife and i are in early 70`s and can`t handle any problems.
Do you have any idea what the US/MEX rate of exchange is?.....
Thanks for the review and pictures.....John

    REPLY

Is there a road south of Brownsville

You cross the Rio from Brownsville to Matamoros and follow 180 South. Be sure to go through customs and declare everything. If you don`t know Spanish at least try a few words. They will appreciate the effort and things will go quicker.

We crossed at McAllen into Reynosa and took 97. The two come together just North of San Fernando.

    and is it passable

I can`t vouch for the stretch north of San Fernando, but South of there had just been paved, 2 years ago now. Local traffic will fly by, but maintain the speed limit, the locals may not get stop but you certainly will if you exceed the speed limit. And watch out for speed bumps. The signs say TOPE. They are found every 50 feet in some villages and in front of houses in the middle of nowhere. They are made of large rope, or small pipe, and you have to crawl over them, or wreck your car.

    and safe?

We were advised to travel only during the day. We left just before dawn and drove to Tuxpan, arriving shortly after dusk, 12 hours.

During the trip, especially in in the early part, we passed through road blocks, one by the army, one by police, one by both. Be sure to have all your paper work in order. We were waved through fairly quickly and weren`t approached for bribes.

Wife and i are in early 70`s and can`t handle any problems.

Shouldn`t be any. Mexicans, on the whole, are friendly courteous people who believe in old world values. A pleasant `Buenos Dais` or `Dais` to a stranger will produce a smile and a reply.

Do you have any idea what the US/MEX rate of exchange is?..

In most places it is 9 to one. Many business will accept US money but it is more polite to use a bank machine and get Pesos, Using a bank machine will give you the current rate at your bank back home, or you can find a Cambio and exchange.

In Cancun, and on Isla Mujeres, it is cheaper to use US currency as most stores will give you a 10 to 1 value.

.. Thanks for the review and pictures

    You are welcome.
