Sorry you had to go home.
I know how that feels.
We are heading to Huatulco next Sunday the 20th.
Will spend 6 nights at the Las Brisas.
Plan to do a little searching for a condo to rent for a week or two.
We have 2 girls graduating college next year and promised to take them for 1 last family outing before we officially cut up their credit cards on our acct and they are on their own!
Thought now that there are direct flights there from Houston that we might could afford that cheaper than a cruise for 6.
I'll let you know how we enjoy it.
We are anxious to go back and see the place from land for more than 6 hours.

Hi
Any additional photos would be wonderful!
Thanks so much for the link.
We'll be staying in the Banff / Lake Louise area for 5 days, then taking the Icefields Parkway to Jasper for a 5 day stay near the Athabasca River.
We'll be returning to Calgary along the David Thompson Highway, stopping off for 2 days at a guest ranch outside Rocky Mountain House.
Then sadly, it's southbound to Calgary and back to boring old Ontario - I'll check our maps, as I think we could fit Hwy 2 into our plans.

Hi Bear,
Thanks for posting photos of the TCH from Calgary to Banff.
In June 2008 I'll be one of those "scenery gawking tourists" from Ontario.
But, thanks to your photos I'll know what to expect, and perhaps won't have such a negative impact on traffic. :)

Are you just going to Banff?
Or further West?
I have more pics of that. http://www.leespage.ca/h/tra/ca/bc/1.html
If you are not going further West go South on Hwy. 2 Between Calgary and Banff, some very beautiful rolling hills and hobby farms.

Thank you!
We don't leave for Huatulco until April 18th.
We will sta 6 nights.
We are very excited.
We fell in love with the place when she docked there last year on a cruise.
We call it "home".
Would love to own a condo there.
Might do a little looking while we are there.
So, are you just a "traveler" now?
For pleasure, or work?

I would rather live in Puerto Angel but I would settle for La Crueita.
Buy me a condo, too, while you are there.
Just pleasure, back to work next month.

La Crucita is the little town in Huatulco.
We are going next month to Huatulco and staying at the Las Bresas.
We will not be doing the All inclusive.
We want to go to town to buy staples to get by.
Do you remember the grocery stores there?
Tawanna B. Katy, Texas USA
REPLY
Hope you are there by now and having a good time.
I rented a car in Cancun and looked at the map but it is too far to go to Huatalco.
So we are in Playa Del Carmen.
There are lots of small stores, and shopping in La Crueita so you won't have a problem.
I don't remember any big stores.
Take the bus up the coast, one hour, to Puerto Angel, http://www.leespage.ca/h/tra/me/pan.html .
I don't think you will be disappointed.
`8/3/8
I was wondering about grocery stores in La Crucecita.
We are staying at Las Brisas, and want to go into town to buy bread, cheese, wine, etd. What can you tell me?

Those are great shots, we really enjoyed them! Interesting to see the Canyon in winter.
Looks like the Yale-Boston Bar area really got nailed by snow this year.
We drive the canyon often but mostly it's March-October.
One possible error I may have found on the site, is the reference to the longest curving tunnel in the world at the time of its construction.
The site refers to it as Sailor Bar but isn't it China Bar?

Regarding the article on Punta Perula .
I think you must have got a part time manager and not the owner.
I have just returned from a cycling tour of the Mexican Coast and 32 of us stayed at the Hotel Playa Dorada which you mentioned and I cannot say enough good things about the hotel and the management.
The rooms were clean and neat and the owner and his wife more than friendly and spoke very good English.
This is the 4th year this cycling tour has been to this hotel.
I would recommend this place to any of my friends.
There is very good restaurant just down the beach from this hotel..

You are the second person to correct me on my remark. This is a good thing.
I love Mexico and I love its people.
Maybe I just caught him (whoever it was) on a bad day, or maybe, with my limited Espanola, I misunderstood his attitude
Also, I suppose I jumped to the conclusion that he was the manager, the man may have just been an employee.
That's is definitely a beautiful area for cycling.
I can see why you return each year.
So far I am still exploring.
Next month the wife and I plan to cover the Yucatan area

I hiked up Black tusk when I was young,
it's a little bit of a grunt to get to the top, but well worth the view of Garibaldi Lake.
Cheekamous should be "Cheakamus", on your website as well , in a couple of places.
My father, worked for PGE from 1966 to his retirement in 1998, so as children we travelled the rails from Squamish to Prince George a number of times,
a very scenic trip, which I always enjoyed.
REPLY
My dog and I used to like to climb hills, when we were young.
Young is the key word there.
Actually I spelled it Cheekamus, which I may have go from the internet.
WebCrawler finds many sites that spell it that way.
However I have made the changes to Cheakamus as, to my recollection of the signs in the area, you are right.
I have often thought of taking that trip but just never got around to it.
Just like I kept thinking of riding the Royal Hudson, on a Sunday to Squamish .
Time slips by so quickly.

Dear Bear,
Thank you for your great pictures of Howe Sound, I grew up in Squamish.
The picture in your album that you describe as a candle on the top of a cake is actually a photo of "Black Tusk".
The other shot of a railway which was PGE is now BCRC, Pacific Great Eastern railway became British Columbia Railway Company where my father was a carmen.
I thank you for your pictures, they brought me back to some great times in this little town.
Cheers,

REPLY
I have added the Black Tusk information to my website.
I always appreciate it when viewers give me added information.
As for the PGE I have never recognized the government take-over of a private company.
Governments should never own private industry.
The BRIC shares are proof of that.
So I always call it the PGE.
To be correct it is now called the BNSF (Burlington Northern Santa Fe).
The BCRC was taken over by the CN (Canadian National) which is no longer Canadian.
PGE has a nicer ( and Canadian) ring to it.

Too dry and windy. Reminds me too much of the Canadian prairies.
However there must be something nice about it.
Many thousands of people live there.
It has all the modern stores.
It is built on hillsides so there are some tremendous views
It is close to many lakes for swimming and fishing.
It doesn't rain all the time like Vancouver.
It is relatively free of smog, unless the wind is blowing he pulp mill in your direction.
P.S. Your English is very good.

Hi,
I found this site after typing "Tuxpam" in google.
I enjoyed reading the stories as I was interested in where the place was and had no idea until then.
My great uncle was an A.B. on a ship going there in 1920 from Glasgow, Scotland and I wanted to know more about the place.
I can't find a map online with that location visible and wondered if you could tell me where I could purchase one.
I also wondered if you know exactly where he would have docked.
The ship was called "San Tirso" and his name "Peter MacKinnon.
Can you tell me why it has 2 names - Tuxpam & Tuxpan?
Regards,
Anne B. Glenrothes, Fife Scotland
REPLY
Sorry, I am currently traveling in China and your E got lost in the shuffle.
First what is an `A. B.'?
I have a fairly good map of Mexico at home and when I return I will E you a page of that state.
I know the town has a water industry but I was never in the part where the docks are.
Although, back then they may have anchored in the ocean and rowed ashore.
The beach is very wide and very long.
I believe that these days the ships come up the river.
Tuxpan is about 2 Km. upstream from the beach.
My buddy just retired to there in July.
I will forward your E and see if he can pull himself out of his hammock long enough to do some research for us.
While in Tuxpan I never saw it spelled any other way but doing research I often find it spelled Tuxpam.
I often wonder if they aren't talking about a different town.
I know there is more than one `Tuxpan' in Mexico.
`08/1/11

I am also driving from Vancouver to Tuxpam, on the way to Cancun.
I am a little apprehensive about it just because I don't speak spanish (very very little I get by) and I have never driven in Mexico before.
I am in Sacramento, CA now, and anticipate being in Tuxpan on the night of Jan 2nd, 2008.
Just wondering if you could recommend a hotel in Tuxpan - what was the best one there? Was it May Palace?
Any info at all you can provide is much appreciated
.any general advice on traveling the roads, or any other good hotels along the way??...
thanks mate!!
Chris G. Vancouver, BC. Canada www.premiercancunvacations.com
PS - When are you coming back to Mexico??
We'll be in Cancun for 6 months or so.
REPLY
Thank you
Definitely no English around Tuxpan. When I speak of tourists in Tuxpan I refer to tne surrounding areas of Mexicans who come to enjoy the beach.
Very few English tourists, but a decent dictionary will get you through.
As long as you try to work with Spanish the people will try to work with you. You, and they, will make lots of errors, just laugh and enjoy.
From California?
When do you plan to drop into Mexico, from Arizona or Texas?
If we are talking about the same Tuxpan (there is more than one Tuxpan in Mexico) it is kind of out of the way for the road to Cancun.
Never drive after dark.
We left Reynoza at dawn and got to Tuxpan at dusk.
Always watch out for speed bumps, called `Topes'. From, Reynoza South they use pieces of pipe or hemp Hawser. they often use two, about six inches apart. Most of them do not have warning signs.
Get a good map, try for one large one for each state. You will be able to find roads that will take you around the toll highways.
As in the US, the toll highways are usually in worse shape that the free roads.
Hotel wise, as soon as you come into the main part of town, river on your right, there is a nice one on your left I think it is the Riviera.
I didn't stay in either. I prefer cheaper.
Still Shanghai for another 2 months. Then maybe Cancun, Cuba, and Tulum.
6 mths. Lucky you.
While in Cancun, check out Xcaret.

Hi Bear,
I came across your page when doing some research for my Architecture Thesis.
I was looking up information in relation to the bridge at Main and Alexander in Vancouver's East End.
Thank you for the info you list on your seawall pages.
I was wondering if you could shed some light on something for me: what was the controversy surrounding this bridge? You have piqued my interest!
Thanks,
Rebecca B.
REPLY
Gotta stretch my memory here.
Going back to 1990, give or take a year.
I was living in the Walton (Anchor) on Alexander, one block from the bridge.
There was no bridge.
There was heavy rail traffic, mostly at night - to service the CPR ferry that went out of Coal Harbour to Nanaimo.
People would make a hole in the fence and cross the tracks to Portside (Crab) Park.
There was a car crossing another block East at Dunlevy. This is, still, on my 2004 map but it is, now, fenced and gated.
They built the bridge for Main Street and included sidewalks to keep people from crawling through the train cars.
However, as you can see, the sidewalk is much too steep for wheelchairs.
There was a great protest that the handicap had been overlooked and were now prevented from enjoying the park. Not that they could have negotiated the railway crossing. Although maybe they did, I just never saw them
To settle the dispute a building beside the bridge was purchased, demolished, and replaced with a concrete labyrinth that is supposedly wheelchair friendly.
However it looks, to me, like it would be a nightmare trying to negotiate the hairpin turns.
And to this day I have never seen a wheel chair use it. Not to say they don't do so, when I am not looking.
Which is most of the time as I haven't lived near that area for years.

I have lots of NM pics
Lots of Desert pics - Utah Texas Colorado but they are mostly highway, no trucks.
On my rigs page I have several pics that were taken in the states, but no desert
On my trailer page I have a section of tankers, some were taken in the US, but, again, no highway or desert.
If any of these are of use to you I can send you the originals.
However, if it is for commercial use there should be some kind of compensation to me.
At least links to my website, somewhere prominent.
Perhaps one of my readers has a pic of a tanker on a highway in NM.

Hey there.
I was wondering if you know anyone selling older games
such as super nintendo games or sega genesis?
I haven't checked the flea market out, but I plan too.
If you know anyone that is selling some, besides ebay. Please contact me about it,

I will move into Wengzou next july.
My girlfriend has been offered a job there and she can`t refuse, so we are going to star an adventure there.
I was looking for information about this city.
Have you got more information about Wengzou?
Eneas M. Malaga, Adalusia Spain
REPLY
I have searched WebCrawler, and I have searched Google but I didn't find any listings for Wengzou.
However you may be spelling it wrong.
The place I went to is called Wenzhou.
At least that is the way it is spelled on the Map of China that I have.
This too is open to interpretation as most Chinese learn their English from people from Britain and their pronunciation of letters is different from that in Canada.
If you are referring to the town that I visited, I really can't tell you anything more than what is in my article.
We were only in the city twice, no more than a couple of hours each time and we didn't go more than a few blocks from the train station.
If that is where you are going I think you are very lucky.
It is a city like any other city but it is close to some beautiful countryside and busses are inexpensive so on your days off you can explore.
Read my article on Yan Dang Mt. and go there on a weekend.
What type of work did you lady get?
Do write me after you get there and tell me how you make out.
Send pictures.

You could try a search engine and look up `Chinese funeral directors', or something.
I found these using Webcrawler.
`Striptease send-offs at funerals are held to boost the number of mourners, as large crowds are seen as a mark of honour.
Local officials have since ordered a halt to "obscene performances" and say funeral plans have to be submitted in advance'

Dear Bear,
I was searching for train information in Wenzhou, China and happened across your page.
The reason I am contacting you is because I am traveling on business to Shanghai and looking for travel information on how to travel to Wenzhou.
Is there a high-speed train between Wenzhou and Shanghai?
If so, would you have some website information?
Donald G. Denver, Colorado, USA.
REPLY
There are places throughout the city of Shanghai where you can buy train tickets. You can also buy them at the station.
You will need to know how to read and write Chinese.
Unless you have an interpreter.
There seems to be two sets of track in each direction, one for the train that stops at every village and one for the train that only makes major stops.
This is not a bullet train but it does move fairly fast.
For the extra few dollars it is worth it to get a sleeping bunk.
6 bunks per room.
Using WebCrawler www.webcrawler.com I found these sites for you.

Are there stores near the Grand Mayan to buy food?
Or in Cancun?
Have you had any food problems eating at any of the Cancun or Playa restaurants?
Thanks
Scott H. Goleta, CA USA
REPLY
The nearest stores are in Cancun or Playa Del Carmen.
Mind you that is only a 20 min. dry.
I have eaten at many restaurants in the Cancun area; Playa Del Carmen, Puerto Morelos, Puerto Morelos is on the beach, between the Grand Mayan and Playa. It is a lovely little town with a nice public beach. Isla Mujeres, Cozumel.
I walk down side streets and find little out-of-the-way places and get excellent food for real good prices.
On the pages of my stories, of the towns I visited, I usually tell of a restaurant or two that serves good, local, food.
I have never gotten sick from any food in Mexico.

Dear Bear,
Thank you so much for your interesting response about the Sanya area and Chinese culture in general.
I was worried that the climate might be too humid for our taste, so nice to hear that you found it great. (We have lived in Hawaii and loved the weather there, but wouldn't want anything more humid/warm than that on a longer term basis).
I know you commented on the bathrooms, but how "third world" are the conditions in China/Sanya?
Is the blatant poverty worse than Mexico, for instance?
Is it dirtier?
And if you don't mind, I'd love to hear how it came to be that you're on the road so much exploring.
Do the interpreters come with tours/acquaintances/business?
We were gone two months this past winter‹Argentina, Uruguay, Panama, Costa Rica‹and plan on much more.
We hope to volunteer and/or teach as we've found it most meaningful when we're involved in a local area.
Thanks!

You have opened a can of worms with this E so I am going to break it down and answer it line by line.
1: Thank you Ė You are Welcome.
2: the climate might be too humid Ė I am not sure what humid is. I hear people talk about it but I only differentiate between hot and cold. To my mind, when I was in Sanya, winter, it was chilly, 28 degrees, Cilius. And the water was too chilly for me to stay in very long. But it sure beat Shanghai which was at 0 give or take 1 or 2 degrees.
3: how "third world" - I have never understood this term, `Third World'. The only world I know that is inhabited by humans is the planet Earth. If you are talking about the evolution of the human animal. We started in the South pacific, spread to Asia, then North America. Therefore Canucks and Yanks are 3rd world.
Bathrooms, in China, are often without toilets as we know them. Especially in trains or older buildings. However many of the newer structures have modern toilets, with seats.
Sanya? As far as I saw there were many new structures in Sanya with many more on the way. However as we were out of town on tours most of the time, I saw very little of Sanya.
The hotel we stayed in was older but did have toilets.
4: blatant poverty Ė First off Mexicans are not poverty stricken. There is poverty in any large city. Especially places like Vancouver or L.A. where the climate is warm enough for people to sleep on the streets in the winter. All cities have poverty in the summer when the homeless won't freeze to death.
Once you leave the city many people mistake the style of live for poverty, because they compare the live style to theirs'.
People don't live in stick houses because they are poor. They use small logs for construction because that is what nature supplies. A building of brick or boards would not allow the air to flow and they would roast in the summer. A building of concrete would keep out the newts and iguana and the house would be over run with mosquitoes.
Last weekend I was invited to a birthday party, pictures to be on my website later, in Mexico.
I was at their house several years ago during a cyclone. Rain was coming through the roof and the wind was blowing mud through the decorative brick that made up the walls.
The back yard screams poverty. They have two cars, a full time maid, a part time maid was hired for the party. They had noisemakers for the children. A company supplied tables, chairs, and table clothes. They hired a 3 piece Mariachi band. There was a large stereo, a large colour TV, most of the children had walkman', or some such electronic crap, and most everyone there was sporting a Cel phone.
Similar situations exist in China, however most of China suffers much colder winters so the houses must be more enclosed. However, unlike Canada, which has the highest standard of living in the world, they do not have insulation, or heating systems.
When it turns cold they simply put on more clothing. The Chinese are number one when it comes to producing down filled clothing. (It is not uncommon to see people walking the streets in down filled pajamas.)
Povertty? No, just, financial, common sense.
Because of this they are used to the cold and when the heat comes in the summer they will quickly find the funds to pay for air conditioning. Regardless of the age of a building the exterior is festooned with AC units.
Here again, though the buildings may look drab, and dowdy. The children have walkmans, each home has a colour TV, and every third business sells Cel phones.
Poverty is in the eye of the beholder. Most Chinese, and Mexicans, that I have met, are happy. They have what they want, when they want it.
My friend Lulu in North East Mexico has a refrigerator. She doesn't have electricity but it sits in her yard and holds the dishes after she washes them in her outdoor sink.
If I lived in that climate, my sink would be outside too.
Think about it.
5: Is it dirtier? Ė As compared to what, my back yard? I see people, miles from a town, with brooms, sweeping the side of the freeway. I see people with brooms sweeping streets in the city. I see people throwing trash everywhere.
In the state of Gurreroa you see tons or trash along the side of the highways.
In the state of Oaxca you see very little trash along the side of the highways.
If you dropped trash along the highway in China, someone would pick it up and sell it.
In the morning, in Mexico, I see people washing the sidewalk in front of their place of business. I see the same in China.
6: you're on the road so much - I am too lazy to hold a job. I will regret this in the next few years when, by age, I am forced to retire and will not have a pension plan. However, in the meantime, whenever I have money I lose it on the stock market or spend it on travel tickets.
I am addicted to the search of warm climates. I am allergic to the cold and rain of Vancouver.
7: interpreters Ė My interpreters are family. My wife is Chinese. Though they have trouble in Sanya. Mandarin and/or Cantonese is helpful but not the main language in Hainan.
8: We were Argentina, Uruguay, Panama, Costa Rica‹and plan on much more.
Very good, and so you should. I met a lady from Salt Lake, in Zihu. Who had just returned from S.A. I envy her, but it is beyond my pocket book.
9: We hope teach. - I have often thought of that as a way of earning a living but unfortunately I am not the type to commit myself to a long term relationship which is what one must do with a class of students.
10: Thanx - You are Welcome.

Hi Bear....
I enjoyed reading/seeing your photos about your trip to Sanya, China!
My husband and I are thinking about teaching English, either in Sanya or Haikou.

Which city would you recommend based on your brief trip?
Thanks for your help!

I find all of China friendly and attractive.
There is always the difficulty of bathrooms, having to squat, my knees aren't strong, having to use chopsticks, I have yet to see a restaurant with a fork, reading the menus, I have yet to see a menu with English, and of course conversing.
I am lucky as I always have an interpreter, or several, with me.
I could picture myself living near Sanya.
The climate is great, similar to where I am at this minute, Huatalco Mexico.
Personally I would never recommend a city.
I hate cities.
However a small town, close to Sanya.
Haikou, I don't know, I have never been there.
I can't get on line right now.

When you get off the plane go out the `in' door. The `out' door is full of taxis, limos, and others who charge mega $ in Yankee funds.
Once outside, try out your Spanish, ask some employee of the airport, for the autobus to el centro or hotel zone.

Dear Bear
Some time back we had a brief email correspondence about your web site "A Death in China" and Chinese death rituals. What I was interested in was the name of the ritual were the family burns the clothing and belongings of the deceased, or shao yi.
My boss and I have written an article for the Socety for Historical Archaeology on our work in the historic Chinatown of Deadwood, South Dakota. In one segment of the article I talk about a small pit found in Chinatown excavation that appears to have been made for a shao yi ritual. In this part of the paper I cite our correspondence as a source for the name of the burning clothes rite.
The editors at the SHA have asked that I provide documentation showing I have your permission to use the correspondece. Basicily, all they need is an email stating that you give your approval to use our correspondence.
After a long and painful process I have nearly complete my masters thesis. I would like to send you a copy of the finished product as a way of expressing my gratratue for your help.
Hope to hear from you soon,

I would enjoy that very much.
PS. I just returned from China where we acknowledged the third year of my mother-in-law's passing.
Have a look at my funeral page, http://www.leespage.ca/h/tra/ch/fun.html . You may find the addendum, at the bottom, of interest, particularly the map of rice, that I watched a monk, painstakingly, create on the floor of the temple.
Something I have come to believe is that there is no set pattern for the beliefs of Buddhism. We rented an entire temple, with monks, just down the street from my sister-in-law's, for the entire day.
I feel that there is no set way a person follows their belief. As there are many religions in the Western World, each one programmed to the whims of a group of people, so are there ways of following Buddha.
For instance the Shao Yi. I seriously doubt a poor family would do this. Nor do I think a family with expensive furniture would do it.
I think in such cases there would be a burning of substitute furniture, as is the case of the burning of shi bo. No one would burn real money.
We went to Shanghai to commemorate the death of Feng He Hua. But we didn't do it on the day, or week, we were supposed to. And during the week events changed days, and times, to meet other criteria.
Though there may be a script to these proceedings but I believe it is followed, and altered, at the whims and fancies of those performing the rites.

Driving to Mexico.
Get your insurance at the border, before, or immediately after, you pass through customs.
Keep all you receipts.
When you get back take them to your insurance company.
In B. C., British Columbia, if you can prove what dates your car was in Mexico, ICBC, the insurance company, will reimburse you for those days.
They don't give you money back but they will extend your coverage by that many days.
I don't know if that will work with American companies, but, hey, why not try.
Don't drive, outside of town, after dark.
Fill up with gas in Puerto Vallarta, It is a long way to the next gas station.
In larger towns stay at hotels that have secured parking.
For sure there are SCUBA stores in Puerto Vallarta, CHICO'S, for one, 150 Km. to the North and in Manzanillo, UNDERWORLD SCUBA, for one, 115 Km. to the South. However there may be a dive shop in Melaque, 68 Km. to the South, or Barra De Navidad, Adventure Quest, 75 Km. to the South.
My search of the web shows that there is a sometimes, part time, shop in one of the hotels in Melaque.

Not a real job, just for June and July.
The only payment I need is either to cover or in the form of basic accomodations - a bed, shower, and dinner would do it fine.

I thought this would be a good way to do it.
I'm a 26 year old female with varried experience including: teaching math, science, English, SCUBA, working at Starbucks, tending bar, leading outdoors trips, serving and cooking in resturaunts, managing, customer service.
Please forward this to anyone you know who might be looking for summer help, or if you know of anyone I could contact I'd really appreciate it.

Sorry it has taken so long to reply.
A few days ago there was an earthquake and the underwater cables from Taiwan to China were severed.
China was unable to reach offshore internet for several days.
They have some of them replaced now but the service for the world internet, in Shanghai, is still pretty slow.
First, I don't know anyone off hand.
Secondly, it is against the law for anyone in Mexico to hire a non Mexican.
Thirdly, for your protection, I won't publish you phone no. or E mail address.
That's the negative side.
On the positive side. I love your idea.
I will post your letter, in my guest book and if I get a reply from one of my readers I will get in touch with you.
The negative side of that, however, is that I get very few readers of my guest book.
Being a man of experience, getting jobs, that is, I have worked for over 178 employers, let me tell you what I would do.
First, pick the area where you want to go.
Use your search engines and find a message board in that area. If you look at my Zihuatanejo, Ixtapa page you will find a couple of message boards there, the same with Cozumel.
Virtually every town in Mexico has a message board and these are read by thousand s of people daily, though mostly by English speaking tourists..
Many of them will have ideas to help you, and will answer quickly.
In Isla I met a lady from England who was working in a SCUBA shop. Mind you, she was gong to move to Mexico and live with the owner. So that is one way around the working law.
The nice thing about Mexico is that your accommodation is inexpensive so you don't need much income.
Pick a town you want to spend 2 months in and go there.
Once you are there, then look for work.
You will have to find someone who will pay you under the table.
If you want to teach English, no problemo.
Virtually any school will take you on. Including the government schools.
A friend of mine was teaching English I a small town on the East coast and the government was paying him, under the table.
Good luck.
And be sure to write and tell us how you made out.

If you need it sooner I suggest you phone information. If they can't find it for you, ask for the number for Scotiabank.
It is only 3 blocks North of the hotel and maybe someone there could look up the number for you in their phone book. (Or the Hotel Colonial, it is only 3 blocks West.)
But you have brought up a very good point.
When I write my stories, if I have phone numbers, or addresses, I should include them.

Hello Bear
What a fabulous web site you have created about Osoyoos and I am so glad that you thoroughly enjoyed your visit to our model railroad display and we would be very happy to be on your web site.
The pictures are really good and we do appreciate you promoting us.
I have been talking to our web master and unfortunately we don't have any possibility at the moment to put a link to your web site on our web site.

Bear,
Thank you so much for the info on Petatlan.
I do know Mexico very well, having lived there for a semester (in DF ) and having been there about 50 times, however its only my 6th visit to Zihu area and we have not been out to the country side.
I am going in Dec and thought a country side visit would be nice.
I will be going by bus though as I usually don't rent a car.
THanks again.

You are welcome.
Answering your question got me going and I have added to my story about Petatlan and now I am adjusting my Soledad De Maciel story.
I am so jealous.
I have been to Mexico fewer than 10 times, and only half of those to Zihu.
You have much to see outside of Zihu. And most of it can be seen by bus, including Petatlan.
Here are some of the places close to Zihu.
Playa Saladita This one may not be doable by bus.
Soledad De Maciel This one may not be doable by bus.
Troncones. (Not much to see, just beach and private homes.) Like Playa Saladita and Soledad De Maciel, the bus will take you past the road but there is probably not a bus from that point and it would be a bit of a walk. However there is a bus from the highway to Barra De Potosi.
That was my first adventure in Mexico. And well worth the trip.
`6/9/28
Did you find it worthwhile to visit Petatlan?
Are there any decent places to eat lunch there around the plaza?
Thank you
Barbara D. Yorktown, IN (Indiana) USA
REPLY
Petatlan is famous for two things, its church, and gold.
If you want Silver jewellery, Zihuatanejo is the place to go. If you want gold jewellery Petatlan is the place to visit.
If you are not familiar with Mexico's country side it is worth the drive to Petatlan, from Zihu. (Zihuatanejo) just for the scenery.
If you are into graveyards, there is, along the way, on a hillside, a large cemetery with many Mexican style structures.
If you like churches, Sunday is the time to go. Visit the church, attend the service.
If you have never tried Pozole, Thursday is the time to go. Time it so you are returning to Zihu, about supper time and stop in Coacoyul. It is the last turn to the right as you come through town.
Coacoyul is the first town South of Zihuatanejo. You have to turn South, before the airport. Take the Acapulco turnoff. Then it is a few miles.
If you go right to the airport and take the road South, when it joins the highway, you have to turn left. If you turn right and carry on to Petatlan, you will miss the little town.
Lunch in Petatlan can be pleasant, though the eateries seem to be hard to find.
If you are on the street of the cheaper jewellery stalls, as you come down the hill to the town center, bear to the right and follow the street to the next block, past the smarter gold stands. On your left will be a nice restaurant.
I have been to Petatlan three times now. Just for short visits. One longer one would have been sufficient, but a short one is worth while.
If you want to make an all day trip of it. Take a detour to Soledad de Maciel. It is just South of Petatlan.
The entire area was once flooded by a tidal wave and millions of people were killed. Several towns and thousand of homes were destroyed. Small pieces of artifacts can be found, virtually, anywhere. Some of the bigger pieces are on display in Petatlan, in the El Centro, the town square.
In Soledad De Maciel some people make a living by guiding you to the top of a small hill and showing you the view.
They also have a small museum in their home.

My husband and I love to sit and read thru the credits at the end of the movies.
I was very thrilled when I saw what your website offers!
We are always asking each other what a job description is for any number of the positions.
The main one that we look for is who the Negative Cutter is (which started back when Mo Henry caught our eye)but now some of the movies are only giving credit to Digital.
Does that mean that Negative Cutters are being replaced?
Do you happen to know what the equivalent is to a Negative Cutter in a digitized movie?
Thank you so much for sharing this info with the world.
I really enjoy going thru it!

Glad you liked it.
My project started when someone asked me what a gaffer is.
Since I occasionally worked with Gaffers, I asked one.
As you can see my project is a work in progress. This week I added carpenters.
I have never met a `Negative Cutter' but I will look for one and let you know the results.
Yes the world is going digital.
Virtually all jobs, directly related to film, or negatives, will become obsolete.
I believe the first theatre is in Nova Scotia.
No one loads film onto a projector.
The movie is sent via satellite from Sony in L. A.
L. A. programs in; the time the movie starts, which movie will play, etc.
Camera trucks will no longer need a darkroom, no one will be running to Kodak to get the next batch of film, trucking companies will not
deliver the latest feature, in cans, to the local theaters.
Many job positions will disappear.
Which means I better get in gear and start listing those jobs on my pictionary, before the people are not around for me to take pictures of.

Hi Bear
Thanks for the suggestions. Yeah, I've been knocking about some of the same ideas ever since I found out the boat was so far away. Technically you're right about being able to come up with a cast and crew in San Diego except that most of the crew here are techs that are old friends, acquaintances and friends of friends. Trying to do that in another city where I don't know anyone ...... (1) well, ... I just don't think I'm charismatic enough to pull it off. Very difficult.
I've toyed with the idea of using green screens, (2) (I'm not sure if that's the same thing you are referring to as slides to background screens), but I know very little about the technology and processes. (Which is a bit ironic in that I have a diploma in robotics and automation technology from b.c.i.t and have worked with green screens on Stargate). (3)
I can envision a host of "choreographic" problems of having actors swinging around on pieces of sub interior equipment that aren't there physically. But it is a good suggestion. I should learn more about it to see what can be done with it. I did work on a short film called Stroke, years ago where they had borrowed a huge background photo blow-up of an urban night-time cityscape image (4). I expect that is what you are referring to as a background screen. (5)
Yeah, I agree. The small space inside the real sub will cause almost insurmountable problems when working with crew and cast. I'm sure that any production with any budget at all would absolutely not try shooting inside. The idea would probably be considered unprofessional to the point of crew mutiny. However, i) it is a real set already extant and available, (as in the actual sub itself), ii) half of the scenes set on the sub will be on the outside deck anyway iii) (6)
I've become really good at using 28mm lenses in still photography in the last number of years, (so I have some idea of how far I can push parametres of shots), and iv) it's about time I put all that robotics training to use, eh? And of course, we will be shooting in high definition digital for the cost and that makes for much smaller cameras and gear. May not be possible in the end but it will be interesting to see what would be possible under the circumstances. We will probably end up using a variety of solutions. Early days.
Let me know if I can help you on your TV pilot project; we can probably do some sort of trading. My day job is repairing and rebuilding speaker systems at Vancouver Audio Speaker Clinic. If that turns out to be of any use to you.
(I wonder what the etymology of "Break a leg" is? Seems like just about the last thing you would want to say to someone walking out onto a stage.) (7)
Anyway, thanks. Keep in touch.
Ciao Steve R. Prehistoric Publishing Vancouver, Canada
REPLY
1. Understand. I have that problem here.
2. Green screens is when they are doing a scene with no background. Usually for aerial shots, like Superman flying.
3. I just finished 3 days on Stargate. I was the last day call to go home Fri. night. The last to work on the series. They will be in studio for all of the next episode. The last, after ten years.
4. This is usually done with huge transparencies.
5. Yes. You would have a background of what ever you want, ocean, city, etc.
6. Then that is simple enough. You paint the floor black and build a conning tower. And use a background transparency
7. Years ago, in theater, it was deemed bad luck to wish an actor `good luck' before they went on stage.

Hi Bear,
The good news is: I managed to locate the sub. Thae bad news is that it's moored at the San Diego Maritime Museum. (This is a problem because I was trying to locate it to see if it would be useful as a set location for a zero-budget independant film project I'm rewriting. It would double the cost to have to ship and accomodate cast, crew and gak to San Diego for the two weeks of shooting.(in late Sept. next year))
I'm afraid I am useless to you as a publisher.
Prehistoric Publishing is the business I set up to promote my own single book, (about Stonehenge). (You have to be a publisher to have your book reposited at the National Library, you see). So, I don't actually publish anything else, (Maybe I should eventually).
After I sent the email I found the page that says that you live near Metrotown. I live in the Knight and Kingsway area. I noticed that you work/have worked as a extra. We should keep in touch.
I'm dragging all my movie tech friends into this video, (which will be done in high-definition digital). It's basicly Shakespeare on a Russian sub. I'm currently translating the original play as faithfully as I can into modern understandable English. Some of it is not too hard but a lot of it is just hell. This is going to keep me occupied for most of the winter.
Happily the story works so well set on a sub that all my tech friends have enthusiasticlly volenteered their work and loan of what gear they have, for no pay up front and shares in any profits downstream, (if there are any).
There is effectively no financing at all, as yet. I wanted to keep independant financing out of this project; it's invariably more trouble than its worth, (and eats the bejesus out of any potential profits). But since they moved the sub to San Diego, we either have to ship cast, crew and gak there to shoot or build convincing sets and shoot here, (a daunting idea as well.
I used to work as a set-carpenter, (Stargate, Betaville, etc.), and from the photos I've seen of the interior of the sub, it will be extremely costly and time-consuming to try to build adequately accurate sets. (Or we have to find a third alternative). Either way the cost of the endeavor just became larger than I can do out of my own pocket so I may have to find some sort of outside financing. It's too bad because I managed to get in touch with the managing director of the group of investors who own the sub and have got a green light on filming on the sub at night for downstream potential financial returns. In short I have a whole Russian sub available for our use effectively for free if we can get to it. Ah, well; I have all winter to get this figured out.
Thanks for writing back. I'll get back in contact a little further down the road on this project.
As for today; I'm off to see the Raven Travelling exhibit.
Best Regards

Thank you for the info about the sub.
I will post it on my website.
Yes, I have a lot of experience as an Extra, also a bit of Stunt, and Acting, and a lot of time as a driver on movies.
I too am trying to produce a zero budget film.
Mine will be a pilot for a TV series.
There are two other scenarios for you to consider.
1: Go to San D. and find all new cast, crew, and equipment. If you can find them here, for free, you can find them there.
2: Go to San D. and find a smaller crew, less equipment, and film establishing shots.
Quality slides to make background screens and then film here in a studio.
This actually may be your best option because there is not room for cast and crew inside a sub.
With background screens you will have room for your cast to act while the camera moves to the best position.
As we say in the Biz, ųBreak a LegÓ.

Hi,
Liked your page on the u-521 sub.
I am trying to locate where it is now, (for an amateur film project).
I understood it was moored in Victoria across from Canoe Brewpub but a 2001 coast guard report mentions that it came free of its pilings, had to be rescued and was taken to Point Hope Shipyards.
But nothing on the net says if it ever got back to its Victoria moorage after, so I suspect it hasn't.
Hank at Point Hope Marine says it isn't there and "that it must have been a long time ago".
So, dead end.
Vague rumours that it was to be taken to the U.S.
By any chance do you know where it is or even who owns it now?
I'd really appreciate any info. you might have.
Thanks.

As a Linkshare affiliate, I have noticed that recently when I purchased a book from Alibris this August (a Linkshare merchant) from my own online shopping site; that the sale was not recorded.
I wrote Alibris a complaint and the sale was recorded.
However, I wonder how many times this occurs.

I also own at Mayan Palace and did very similar (the longest day in our lives).
We just got back from Cabo and the 2 facilities there are under way and the Grand Mayan work looks beautiful.
By the way, we were told in Cabo that the fee paid to the street vendors ws usually over $100 per person/couple.
We even heard of $200 commissions.
The sales people were handing out $400+ to peoplle to sit through a speach (we passed on that) but the Mayan Palace presentation was no BS and they offered us an upgrade from our current (regular to GM).
We never did agree on a price and I walked.

Hi,
I'm a newly qualified PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor.
Was wondering what the job oppurtunities for English speaking Instructors are like in China?
Am living in Thailand at the moment but want to come to China for 2008 and don't want to stop diving.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
David W. Pattaya, Jomtien Thailand
REPLY
Obviously you have seen my diving page for China. That is the only experience I have with diving in China.
From what I saw, at that particular beach, they have lots of instructors.
How many of them are qualified is hard to say. I am sure the Chinese don't worry about that. They have probably never heard of Padi.
As to how many are English speaking, I would say none.
At that time they, probably, never got an English speaking customer.
However that was a few years ago and the tourist industry is probably a lot stronger there now as the area was introduced to the world with the Miss World Competition being held there.
There is now a company in England that books tours to there. You might contact them for some help, info@sanyachinatravel.com .
I think your biggest problem will be, speaking and reading Chinese.
The dive companies there may be interested in hiring an English speaking diver to handle English speaking customers but If you can't communicate with them???
No one that I met in Sanya, spoke English. Neither Mandarin nor Cantonese is the prevalent language in Hainan. Generally they speak an ancient form of Chinese.
The island of Hainan is the only area I know of that has diving, though I am sure there are others. The province of Hainan, of course, will be the strongest area because it is China's answer to Mexico, coral beaches and coral reefs, etc.

I am sorry.

If you go to www.cubamapa.com/province-map-matanzas-map.htm there is a map of Cuba.
If you notice the main highway goes through, from West (Matanzas) to East (Cardenas).
The other road, goes from Varadero due South, through Santa Martha.
Just after this road crosses the highway, to the South of the highway is two streets that run West and a couple of little cross streets.
South of these is a service road that runs along the side of the highway with a small subdivision.
That's it. The whole town.
I don't know the names of any of the streets.
I though this would be where the workers for Varadero live but apparently the big busses bring the workers from Matanzas.

Hi,
My name is Dan S.
I'm a designer in Winnipeg and I've been looking for a stock photo of the Woodwards "W" in Vancover for use on the front cover of a book I am designing the cover of.
You have a picture on your site that is exactly what I have in mind.
By any chance, would you be interested in leasing that photo for use on the cover of a new book written by a Vancouver author?
If you are interested please contact me at the supplied email address above or this just reply to this address.

(Bear)I assume you are referring to pic s25 on my seawall story.
(Dan) I've always loved that W, though I hear it's being moved.
(Bear)The `W' is being saved but unfortunately the tower under it isn't. The supporting tower is a miniature replica of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France and is older than the `W'.

Dear, (Bear)
First of all, what a great webpage! Keep up the good work!
I'm a 23 year old student from the Netherlands, Europe ;). Currently I'm offered a graduating traineeship/internship in Cancun and the nearby areas, such as playa del Carmen etc.
I'm a real estate student, so I'm not quite sure about the r.e market down there but I think it is an inspiriting and fun environment to work in.
Your site has been a great help! Although the site was full of info, I got one question for you,
what did you think about the life ( the daily life ) in Cancun? Is there any or is just mass tourism and mass tourism? Because I hope to get along (integrate, learn there culture, learn Spanish ) with the locals.
I hope you would take the time to reply to my.
Thank you in advance and have a good one!

Thank you.
Mexico, like Canada, and the USA, was originally populated by Indians. All three countries were invaded by Europeans. Consequently the population of all three countries range from short and brown to tall and white, with all heights, and skin colours, in between.
Various areas of North America have a predominate language, other than the original Indian, ranging from French in the North East, English in the central areas, to Spanish in the South West.
Cancun, like most Mexican cities, nowadays, is of two parts, the tourist area, or Zone Hotels, hotel zone, and Colonia, the original city.
The city part is where you will find; the stores, where the locals shop, the homes where they live, the places where they work.
If you wish to get to know these people, stay in this area, low cost hotels, low cost restaurants, and Spanish spanking people.
It is easy to get to know these people, even if you don't speak their language.
Simply learn a few words, like; thank you, Gracias, excuse me, Pardon, and carry a small dictionary. That and a lot of sign language can lead to new friends, and a pleasant visit.
You must always realize that though you think you have communicated clearly there is a good chance that they did not understand, or you did not understand.
Be prepared to repeat your conversations, more than once.
Of course, to really learn of the people and their ways, you need to get out of the city, go away from the ocean and the tourists, go to smaller towns, inland.
This is where I will go next year.
So far I have only explored the coastal communities.
Have a good trip.

Hi!
I've been searching for a photograph of the False Creek Racing Canoe Club (no one at the club has one!) and that's how I found your site.
I would like to ask for your permission to use one should you have one and be willing to allow me to use it.
It's for a book on sprint canoe clubs - low key sort of publication meant for the sprint canoeing community.
Would you be able to help?
I've never actually seen the club.
One of your pictures *s504* looks like it might be it but I could be wrong.
Thanks
Liam B. London, ON Canada
REPLY
Sorry it has taken so long to get back to you.
s504 is the children's playground, actually about a block away from the FCRCC lock-up. Other than the ladies in the canoe, my website does not have a picture of their club.
However, I made it down there today and took some pictures, they are still in the camera and when I get them out I will show them to the FCRCC and if there is any that they don't object to you using I will send them to you.
Their office is actually in the False Creek Community Centre building so I took a picture of the main entrance to the Centre.
I also took pictures of their canoes and lock-up which is ½ a block from their office. Neither of which can be seen from the seawall which is why I don't have a picture on my website.
That particular part of my website is pictures of what you would see if you were walking the Seawall.

The information you just have acquired is shocking and contrary to what we are told by our government. Everything in this e-mail and web-page can be easily verified so don't just take our word for it. Take the time to verify it for yourself.
Our Country's future is at stake. Our country has been hijacked and our nation is in serious trouble. Now there is tangible evidence and yet our government is still lying to us to protect the Bush administration from prosecution for treason.
Our government did everything they could to try to stop us from hearing what really took place and how our people died in New York at the World Trade Center.
It took a court order and three years of litigation to obtain these audiotapes that our government does not want you to hear. In this web-page are five clips from a surveillance camera that was outside the Pentagon during the 9/11 attacks, and former immigration officer for Homeland Security, Mary Schneider, implicates the Bush administration.
Eyewitnesses at the scene speak out about the World Trade Center collapse, and the voices of the rescue workers from audio tape 776923 where a rescue worker yelled out "EXPLOSION!" as his radio went dead and the 26th floor exploded and one of the World Trade Center buildings collapsed.
Click here for more information: http://liar-55.tripod.com/index.html
We need to bring the Bush administration to justice for what they have done to our country and for the murders of our people.
Thank you for listening.

Dawn , Roseville, United States
REPLY
If you look at the pictures in my story, funeral in china you will see that people wear anything, mainly what is needed to keep warm.
Close friends or relatives will wear a black piece of cloth pinned to their left sleeve.
Close members of the family, sons, daughters, will wear a white sash around their waist and the women will wear a white flower in their hair.
No one will burn your clothes, the family will burn the clothes of the deceased so she will have them to wear in the after life.
As neither you or your boyfriend are directly related you should not wear anything special, just dress nice.
You could put a patch of black cloth about 3 In. X 4 pinned to your sleeve.
You could have a florist deliver, to their home, a large wreath on a stand but you probably can't find a store that makes such things, near you.
Instead you could take a large piece of silk.

I appreciate the photo gallery, but there is an error regarding Harry Jerome:
He never won gold at the Olympics.
(Mr.) Jerome won bronze at the 1964 Olympics.
He won gold at the 1966 Commonwealth Games and 1967 Pan-Am Games, but never higher than bronze in three Olympic appearances.
I am also puzzled by the assertion that he used to train on the seawall.
I have never heard this before and can find no reference to it elsewhere.
Can you cite any sources for this?
Cheers,

Thank you for your letter.
Re: the Gold Medal, I have changed the caption under my picture.
Re: the use of the Seawall, I used to drive tour bus and the speech they taught us included the fact the Mr. Jerome used to practice on that stretch of the Seawall. Which is why the statue was erected at that spot.
