DISAPPOINTED is the feeling I am left with after touring this concrete and glass edifice to some architects dream for recognition.
I have always know that the R.C.M.P. had a museum in Regina and I have often wanted to visit. Alas, that is never to be. The museum is gone. In its stead is a cavernous tomb that has a shape, totally unrelated to a building other than some religious cavern of the 21st century.
I suppose, from the size of the interior, and the size of the parking lot, that it was designed to accommodate many viewers at any given time. However the time I was given there were very few of either; cars, or visitors. And the few staff I saw were as bored as I was.
And nowhere was there a live Mountie that you could photograph or talk to. Unlike Banff where each day a member faces the dreaded chore of dressing in Royal Red and sauntering along the main drag where he would be the target of tourists'; cameras, and questions.
All in all, despite the fact that I had nothing else to do that day, a waste of my time, and my $12.00

I, once, wrote to the RCMP requesting a copy of my father's service record. The reply was about 2 sentences long, as if his service was a state secret. There was no mention of his time in the `Ride' or of his Service in the North. Maybe he was a Canadian James Bond.

My father only completed grade 8.
When he applied to serve with `The Force' (RCMP) they said he didn't have enough education but they would take him if he agreed to serve up North, in the North West Territories.

I had planned on bequeathing my photo to the RCMP museum but now I don't think I will.
The displays have been designed by some high school graduate who believes in modern technology. Everywhere are small TVs, or movie screens, to watch short clips, and headphones to listen to other informational bits. (If I wanted that sort of information I could gather it at home on my computer.)

The few Mounties in the display were uniforms mounted on mannequins with blank white faces leaving the display cold and characterless.

While serving in the North my father made friends with the Eskimos (Now called Inuit)
They made him articles of clothing, boots (Moccasins and mukluks) and mitts.
Most of my father's uniforms, and Northern wear, while stored at my mother's, was stolen.
The few remaining items I donated to the Maritime Museum to put on the St. Roch as my father had once been a passenger on said vessel.

The entire interior is dimly lit requiring the use of flash to take a picture but as flash tends to reflect off of glass it is pretty useless as most of the displays are glass fronted, leaving photographers with pictures of glare or reflections.

From East to West, or vice versa one travels on the TCH disguised as Victoria Ave. and Ring Rd.
Map of Regina (Courtesy of City of Regina)
Entering the city from the East the TCH is called Victoria Ave. and will take you into the heart of the city. However, after passing through an area of large designer stores with their large parking lots, to avoid the downtown, one turns South on Ring Rd.
Ring Rd. proceeds South and then curves West until it leaves the city at Lewvan Dr.
Ring road is not a true ring as it doesn't complete a circle. From Victoria Ave. it curves North then East but doesn't exit the city. If one is in the Northern part of the city it is simple to follow Ring Rd. to Pasqua St. and follow it South. Its name changes to Lewvan Dr. and intersects with the TCH where it becomes Ring Rd.
When first built, Ring Rd. was on the outskirts of the city but the city has expanded to the East and North, overlapping the Ring.
![]() TAKEN FROM HWY. 11 The building in the background was Ipsco Now called Evraz Inc. since it was sold to a Swedish corp. A steel mill plant for making rolled metal pipe, sheets 24-48" wide, twisted into a tube and then seams welded. Mostly used for natural gas pipes. (Info supplied by Dave K. of Moose Jaw, Sask.) |

FYI (For your edification)
R.C.M.P. DOES NOT stand for Regina Canada Member of Parliament
It stands for Raw Carrots & Mashed Potatoes.
