On 19th of May, 1850, Cardenas was the fist city to raise the flag of Cuba.
Once a prosperous and thriving metropolis Cardenas has fallen into poverty and despair.
If you read my article on Santa Martha you know how I came to be in Cardenas.

I arrived in a lady bug.
MOTORCYCLE TAXI THAT I CALLED `LADY BUGS'

THE CAB DRIVER STOPED AT HER HOME IN CARDENAS,
ABOUT A 15 MINUTE RIDE FROM SANTA MARTHA.
HER HUSBAND IS WORKING UNDER HIS TAXI
WHILE HER SON SWEEPS THE DOORWAY
I hired a ladybug to tour Santa Martha and the cab driver suggested Cardenas. After a short stop at her home we toured up and down many of the streets.
Everywhere, I saw horse drawn transportation, people standing idle, buildings boarded up, or simply left vacant.
Cardenas has few tourists and no tourist industry, in fact no industry at all. Any factories I saw were standing empty, rusting away in the salt air.
